Russian Anastasia Myskina won her third career title
on Sunday, defeating countrywoman Elena Likhovtseva in the final of the Qatar
Women's Open.
Myskina, the second seed, needed just 58 minutes to register a 6-3 6-1 victory
over the fifth-seeded Likhovtseva, in the first all-Russian final in WTA Tour
history.
"I am very proud of being part of history," Myskina said.
"I played really well today and I am very happy. I did not have a game plan,
I just tried to win the points.
"The first set was a bit tight, but after the
break in the seventh game everything worked.
"The second set was not as easy as
the score shows, I fought all the way."
Myskina, who is the 11th-ranked player in the world, took home £16,000 in her
first victory since the Brazil Open in September.
Likhovtseva was seeking her third career title and first since 1997.
"Anastasia played really well," Likhovtseva said.
"She was in control throughout the whole match. She served real well, was
aggressive and took many chances.
"She mixes up her game a lot which makes it
really hard to control."
In 1972 when Russia was part of the Soviet Union, Olga Morozova defeated
Marina Kroshina in the final of the Eastern Grass Court Championships in New
Jersey.
