Slovakia won the Fed Cup for the first time
when Janette Husarova dished out a thrashing to Spain's Arantxa
Sanchez-Vicario.
In the final at Maspalomas on Gran Canaria, Husarova's win followed a dramatic
victory by Daniela Hantuchova over Conchita Martinez to give the Slovaks a 3-1
triumph in the final.
The scheduled doubles match was not needed and cancelled.
Sanchez-Vicario's defeat provided a sorry illustration of how the former world
number one's game has fallen apart this year, and it could be that this was her
final appearance in the Fed Cup.
The Slovakians have only been competing as a nation in the Fed Cup since 1994,
after gaining their independence, and they become the ninth country to win the
Rose Bowl trophy.
While Husarova thrashed Sanchez-Vicario, Hantuchova needed more than three
hours to overcome former Wimbledon champion Martinez - winning 6-7 (10-8) 7-5
6-4.
