Jill Craybas claimed her first ever WTA tour title
with victory at the Japan Open on Sunday.
The American won the final six games on her way to completing a 2-6 6-4 6-4
victory over Croatia's Silvija Talaja and, in doing so, became the oldest of 13
first-time winners this season.
"Words can't even describe how I feel at the moment," said the 28-year-old,
who had never previously got past the quarter-finals in her career.
"It's a huge win for me. I've been working so hard over the last two years to
improve my mental approach to the game and my confidence. Even when I was down
0-4 in the third set, I believed in myself, and that made the difference in the
important points."
Talaja was seeking her third career title and first in more than two years.
But she could not put away Craybas.
"I didn't play great, but she's so tough and she plays great when she's
down," Talaja said. "From 1-4 in the third set, she started to be more
aggressive, and she didn't miss anything. My serve also let me down."
