KUZNETSOVA CLAIMS BALI WIN

Svetlana Kuznetsova ensured a place in the world's top 50 for herself after claiming the Wismilak International on Sunday.

The 17-year-old Russian overcame experienced Spaniard Conchita Martinez 3-6 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 to take her second title of the year after also winning the Helsinki Open last month.

Martinez, the eighth seed who was playing in her first final since the 2000 French Open, claimed the opening set but then wasted an early break in the second,

Kuznetsova broke back and then clinched the set on the tie-break.

She carried the momentum going into the decider but wasted four match points when serving for the title before eventually sealing victory.

Kuznetsova was ranked 264 at the start of the year but will break into the top 50 when the new listings are announced next week.

"The match was very, very tough for me mentally," said Kuznetsova.

"I don't think I played my best today because I was so nervous, and when I am nervous it is tough for me to play my game.

"It was a different situation to Helsinki when I won my first WTA title.

"I wasn't nervous there at all. But here it was very difficult because having to beat Arantxa (Sanchez-Vicario) yesterday was the most difficult day of my life, and so I felt obligated to win today."

Kuznetsova defeated doubles partner Sanchez-Vicario in the semi-finals and acknowledged the former Grand Slam winner's contribution to her success this year.

"I dedicate this win to Arantxa for all the help she has given me," said the St Petersburg-born player.

"I don't think I'll ever meet a nicer person in my life who is not in my family."

Kuznetsova is also coached by Sanchez-Vicario's brother, Emilio Sanchez.

Martinez, 30, has not triumphed since claiming the German Open in 2000.

"Obviously, it was a very close match," said the Spaniard.

"I had a lot of chances, especially in the second set tie-break, but I just couldn't pull it out.

"I think I'll be happier with my week when I wake up tomorrow, but of course I'm disappointed with the result right now.

"But it's been a good effort for me this week. I feel I've been playing quite well, so it's been very positive."
