Serena Williams added another title to her
ever-growing collection by claiming the Sparkassen Cup in Leipzig on Sunday.
The world number one, who has now won 15 straight matches and 36 of her last
37, overcame Russia's Anastasia Myskina, seeded six, 6-3 6-2.
The triumph gave the elder of the tennis-playing Williams siblings a WTA
Tour-leading eight tournament wins this season, bettering the seven of sister
Venus.
She also became the first number one player to capture the crown at Leipzig
since 1993 when Steffi Graf triumphed.
Despite her current record, Williams is not satisfied with her game and insists there is room for improvement.
"I played quite well today - still not at the level I would have liked to,"
she said.
"It was a great challenge for me coming here after winning in Tokyo.
"Overcoming the jet lag and the emotional highs since winning the US Open was
a big obstacle. I am very happy to have won my eighth title this year.
"I have to thank my god, Jehovah, for allowing me to have a year such as
this."
She paid tribute to her beaten opponent who had stunned defending
champion Kim Clijsters in the semi-finals.
"Anastasia had a great week, especially beating Kim yesterday," said
Williams.
"I knew I had to be on my toes. My goal is still to improve as much as I can
and reach my full potential."
Myskina was beaten but not bowed.
She conceded: "Serena simply played too good for me today.
"Still, I am happy with my week, a little bit tired after my long win against
Kim yesterday but I'm really happy with the way I have been playing for the last
three months. All the hard work is paying off."
