Russian Dinara Safina won her first-ever WTA title
after defeating Slovakian Henrieta Nagyova in the final of the Idea Prokom Open
at Sopot.
Safina, the sister of world number two Marat Safin, took the first set 6-3 and
became the youngest player this year to win a tour title when Nagyova retired
hurt 4-0 down in the second set.
Nagyova started well breaking Safina's serve to love in the opening game but
little went her way from then on.
Safina immediately broke back and quickly went into a 3-1 then 4-2 lead,
serving out the set in just 35 minutes.
The Hungarian, suffering from an ankle problem, struggled in the second set
and after going 3-0 behind took time out to have her left ankle heavily
strapped.
And despite her best efforts she only completed one further game before
deciding to retire.
After the match Nagyova explained: ``I've had trouble with my left ankle for
the last month but yesterday's semi-final match with Tathiana Garbin, which
lasted nearly three hours made it much worse.
``It hurt me after that match and all last night. I was prepared for the match
with Safina today. I know she plays aggressively but I couldn't use my legs as I
wanted to and was late for the balls.''
Safina seemed quite relaxed about her triumph and said: ``I still need to
improve a lot. I can play at this level for an hour at the moment but to get to
the top I have to be able to play for three hours.''
The 16-year-old added: ``It's great to have my first title and to be inside
the top 100. Marat phoned me and I told him I had won and he was really
pleased.''
