Swiss teenager Myriam Casanova upset top seed
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario to take the French Community Championships in Brussels.
A wild card appearing in just her fifth WTA event, Casanova claimed her maiden
title by rallying for a 4-6 6-2 6-1 victory over the four-time Grand Slam
winner.
Casanova, still three weeks from her 17th birthday, knocked out the third,
seventh, sixth and first seeds en route to her triumph.
She was appearing in her second career title match, having lost to Martina
Muller of Germany at Budapest in April.
Casanova avenged the loss to Muller with a straight-sets victory over her in
the quarter-finals.
She also eliminated third seed Cristina Torrens Valero of Spain in the first
round and defeated sixth seed Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain in the semis.
Sanchez-Vicario was appearing in her first final this season. The three-time
French Open champion has won just one of her 29 career titles since 1999 and
entered the week having lost three consecutive matches and half of her 28 this
season.
