Number one seed Monica Seles completed her French Open
preparations with a comfortable victory over fellow American Chanda Rubin in
Madrid on Saturday.
The 29-year-old never looked in trouble despite a gallant effort from Rubin,
and won the match in straight sets 6-4 6-2.
Rubin was always battling to hold her serve in the opening set, and it was no
surprise when Seles finally made the break through.
The former Yugoslav national closed out the match with little fuss in the
second.
It was Seles' 53rd career singles title and her first clay court title since
the 2000 Italian Open.
Seles said: "I'm really happy to have won here, because I was improving with
each match throughout the week.
"It all looks good for my chances at Roland Garros (French Open). It's a
different game in a different city.
"But I'm glad to have played here this week and now it's just a matter of
staying healthy and continuing to improve.
"It's a great way to go into a Grand Slam with a tournament win, so I'm
confident about the next couple of weeks."
