Jelena Dokic powered to her third title of the
year at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, upsetting the Russians by beating one
of their own.
Elena Dementieva, the eighth seed who beat Martina Hingis in 70 minutes on
Friday, proved no match for brilliant fifth seed Dokic who emerged a 6-3 6-3
winner.
She began this season title-less, but after triumphs at the Italian Open and
the Princess Cup she has been knocking on the door of the world's top 10.
This win will take her ahead of Nathalie Tauziat and into the elite 10.
Still only 18, Yugoslavian Dokic has put behind her controversy surrounding dad
Damir and is fast emerging among the brightest of the new crop of Europeans on
the Tour. She began the year, of course, as an Australian before defecting to
her country of birth.
Dementieva is still looking for a first career title, but reaching the Moscow
final strengthens her 13th place in the world rankings and her hold on the
Russia number one position - well ahead of Anna Kournikova.
