Picture Murray - easy victory over Gulbis.

DAY FOUR COMMENTARY

2125 : Murray and Huber live to fight another day. After winning the second set on a tie-break, they've raced through the decider 6-1.

2120 : It will be Troicki next for Murray as the Serbian comes from a break down to take the final set against Gimeno-Traver 7-5.

2052 : Gimeno-Traver has a break in the final set against Troicki. It's currently 3-1 in that one, while Murray Sr and Huber are in a tie-break in the second set of their mixed doubles clash.

2040 : Baltacha and Elliott lose in straight sets to the seventh-seeded Azarenka and Vesnina. Brits still involved and not called Murray are becoming a Wimbleddon rarity.

2033 : Troicki forces a decider against Gimeno-Traver. Cracking match that one.

2030 : Stepanek has beaten Starace 6-3 in the fifth. He plays David Ferrer in round three.

2024 : Radek Stepanek and Potito Starace are well into a fifth set on Court 12, and it looks like we're heading the same way on 14 where Troicki leads Gimeno-Traver 5-3 in the fourth.

2022 : Azarenka and Vesnina have turned the second set around against Baltacha and Elliott. After trailing 3-1 they now lead 4-3 with a break and are just two games from victory.

2018 : Jankovic spurns one match point with a double fault, but snares the next with a crisp forehand winner down the line. Impressive performance from the sixth seed, who's all smiles after a routine victory.

2016 : The curious case of Troicki v Gimeno-Traver continues. Troicki now in control of the fourth set at 4-1. It's gone 6-0 1-6 in the last two sets in a clash for the right to face Murray on Saturday.

2015 : Jankovic will have to serve this out. Benesova holds fairly comfortably, despite a troubling tendency to stand and admire her shots even as Jankovic is sprinting along the baseline to retrieve them.

2012 : Jankovic just one game away now after another routine hold. Benesova at least shows some emotion, letting out a squeal after after missing a forehand at 15-0.

2007 : Ah. Or not. Azarenka and Vesnina break back to trail 2-3 and get back on serve. Benesova improving slightly on Court Two and starting to strike the ball quite sweetly. Might be too late though, she trails by a set and a break at 3-4 in the second as the sun just starts to disappear behing the London skyline. It's been another beautiful day in SW19. Roof? What roof? Might need it tomorrow, though...

2006 : Looks like I owe Baltacha and Elliott an apology: they're 3-1 up in the second set.

2003 : Jankovic maintaining her lead over Benesova. She leads 3-2 still with that early break.

2000 : Gimeno-Traver takes a 2-1 lead over Troicki after racing through the first set 6-1.

1953 : Murray and Huber have fared marginally better - perhaps because Huber's American - but only marginally. They've dropped the first set 6-2 against Rik De Voest and Raquel Kops-Jones.

1951 : Azarenka and Vesnina take the opening set 6-0 against Baltacha and Elliott. Doubling the players on court doesn't seem to be improving the Brave Brits' chances at SW19 this year.

1950 : All too easy for Jankovic at the moment, as she breaks Benesova with almost indecent ease in the opening game of the second set.

1948 : Topsy-turvy affair out on Court 14. After losing the second set to love, Gimeno-Traver leads 3-1 in the third. One-set all there - winner plays Murray on the middle Saturday.

1944 : Benesova holds serve and then even manages to take a couple of points against the Jankovic serve. But a couple of big first serves and a booming forehand winner take Jankovic to a one-set lead. Excellent set of tennisfrom the number six seed. Over 70 per cent of first serves in, 10 winners and just two unforced errors. Murray-esque.

1937 : Still plenty of Brits on court tonight. But it's not going particularly well. Elena Baltacha and Amanda Elliott are 3-0 (and a double break) down against Victoria Azarenka and Elena Vesnina, while Murray and Huber are a break down on Court Three. Jankovic holds to love for a 5-1 lead - she's lost only one point on serve in this set.

1934 : Double break for Jankovic now. The Serbian has had a tough time recently - and wasn't particularly impressive in round one - but has made a superb start on Court Two this evening.

1930 : Troicki has hit back in fine style after losing the first set to Gimeno-Traver on a tie-break: the 30th seed has raced through the second set 6-0. Winner of that one faces Murray next, remember. Jankovic, meanwhile, opens up a 3-1 lead over Benesova and looks in good order.

1928 : It's been a good day for Andy - now brother Jamie is on court with Leizel Huber kicking off his mixed doubles campaign.

1924 : Over on Court Two, Jankovic has broken Benesova in the opening game of the match.

1923 : Gonzalez finishes Mayer off in style. Two unreturned serves and a backhand winner down the line take him across the finish line, and the crowd are on their feet hailing both players. Superb evening entertainment.

1920 : Might not be all over on One just yet. Mayer forces break point with a smash to end a quite sensational rally that had the crowd gasping.

1918 : Gonzalez serving for the match on Court One now after a tough run-out against Mayer.

1914 : Jelena Jankovic, the sixth seed, is about to start against Iveta Benesova on Court Two. An evening outing for the former world number one.

1910 : So Murray may have finished but the action is continuing around the grounds. On Court One, Fernando Gonzalez is now just two games from victory, leading Leo Mayer by two sets to one and four games to two. Meanwhile, Gimeno-Traver has taken that tie-break against Troicki to open a one-set lead.

1907 : "A lot better than the first match," is Murray's immediate verdict. "I definitely served better. If I serve like that for the rest of the tournament I've got a good chance of doing well."

1904 : The stats show how good Murray was just five unforced errors in the match - all in the first set. He did not lose his serve and faced just two break points - both in the very first game. Nine and a half out of 10 for Andy.

1901 : A Murray forehand is angled well and forces the error from Gulbis. That brings up match point. A forehand pass follows and Murray has a 6-2 7-5 6-3 victory. I said earlier Murray would be keen to put on a show and he's done just that. A highly-impressive display has shown why he's rated second favourite for the title. Gulbis had no answers, especially on the Murray serve, and he progresses to meet Daniel Gimeno-Traver or Viktor Troicki in round three on Saturday. They are currently on court and playing a tie-break in their first set.

1858 : Murray again holds to love, taking his ace count into double figures in the process. He's served superbly today.

1856 : Back-to-back love games moves the score to 4-3 Murray on Centre. Murray has won 12 of the 13 points he's played on serve in this third set. Two more holds and he's into the last 32.

1854 : Fabrice Santoro's Wimbledon singles career is over - he's just lost in four sets to Juan Carlos Ferrero. The tournament will be poorer for the Magician's absence in the future.

1853 : Gulbis shows he's still got some fight in him, bouncing back from 15-30 to hold and close the gap to 3-2. Had he dropped that game things really would have been over.

1851 : I've not been following the Court One match much but Gonzo looks in the wars. His right knee is heavily strapped, while he's also got the middle finger on his racquet handed bandaged up!

1850 : Murray makes it 3-1 with another comfortable game on serve. 3-1. Over on Court One, Fernando Gonzalez has just taken the third set 6-4 and now leads Leo Mayer by two sets to one. I bet he feels like dancing. Sorry.

1847 : A similar point from Murray, just keeping the ball deep and making Gulbis play. The error duly arrives and it's two break points at 15-40. Backhand pass makes it 2-1 and this match looks over.

1844 : Murray holds to 15 in a game highlighted by a superb catch in the crowd! Gulbis just can't find any answers on return.

1842 : Gulbis wins a lengthy opening game of the third set, saving a break point in the process. You sense Murray could easily push on for a straight-sets win here.

1841 : Joy of joys! More British success. Ken Skupski and Katie O'Brien have just beaten Ashley Fisher and Abigail Spears 6-4 6-4 in the first round of the mixed doubles.

1839 : Here's top seed Dinara Safina's response to being put on Court Two today: "Hopefully next match I'll play on a bigger court. Of course it's not fair, but I'm not doing the schedule. If tournament directors, referees or whatever think this way then that's it." Not sure about the fairness point. The top seed doesn't have to play on the showcourts always. And the dimensions of the court down on Two are the samw as on Centre and One.

1837 : There's been a fighting repsonse from Elena Baltacha, who has inevitably been asked about the threat of funding cuts from sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe earlier today. "I can only speak on the women's behalf but, if you look at the bigger picture and look at how the girls have actually done through the year, I don't think that anyone's budget should get cut for that. Just because the girls lost in a tight two sets or a tight three sets, you've got to look at what has actually been going on for the whole year. A lot of people think that everything revolves around Wimbledon but it is just one week of the year for us. If nothing happens at Wimbledon, it's not the end of the world. We play 30 to 35 other tournaments and there are four or five of us fighting for the top 100 who are not far away from that spot. All the girls' rankings have gone up. It's the most exciting it's been for years.'' It's all true. The average Briton doesn't get too excited about tennis for 11 months of the year - that's been the case for a long time. And the British women have improved. To have four in the top 100 - which could happen in the next few months - is a much better predicament than we've had for years. OK, it's not as good as having players regularly challenging for Grand Slams but then how many nations ghave that? Email your thoughts to: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1835 : Another error on a drop shot from Gulbis sees Murray to 40-0. A drop volley this time saves one of the set points but an ace sees Murray into a two-set lead.

1831 : Murray breaks! Out of nowhere it seems. Gulbis gets a little tight and falls down 30-40 to create the first break point of the set. On break point, Murray plays some great defence, just pushing the ball back each time and eventually the error comes with a netted backhand. The Briton will serve at 6-5 for a two-set lead.

1827 : Almost the perfect game from Murray in response - three aces in a row before he loses the next point on a second serve. Still he holds to 15. Andy Roddic served a perfect game at Queen's recently so it can be done!

1825 : Gulbis now leads 5-4 in the second set but it remains dominated by the serve. At least the Latvian now has a foothold in the match after being totally outplayed in the first. The pressure is now on Murray as the set enters its business end.

1823 : Bizarre scenes on Court Two as Haweye goes into meltdown! It calls the ball out even though it shows it landed on the line. The umpire laughs and gets on the phone. Juan Carlos Ferrero isn't best pleased. Had it been called out, he would have won the set. It doesn't prove costly - the point is replayed and Ferrero winsit to take the set 6-4 and a two-sets-to-one lead.

1820 : Serve-volley tactics from Gulbis see him move back in front. Serve is dominating this set. Meanwhile, Gonzalez levels his match with Mayer by serving out the second set 6-4.

1818 : Gulbis is really not making an impression on Murray's serve. Another easy hold, this one to 15, keeps Murray level in the set. Perhaps he can hold on for a tie-break as that looks his best chance right now.

1815 : Gulbis finally makes a drop shot work, finishing the game with one which Murray got back bu the Latvian duly put the ball back into the open court. 3-2.

1814 : Davydenko finishes off Victor Crivoi in straight sets. Another comfortable win for the 12th seed. That will bring Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Viktor Troicki onto court. The winner of that match will face Murray or Gulbis.

1812 : Normal service resumes for Murray on his own delivery - a love hold. 2-2. He still looks in control of this match.

1810 : Gonzalez fashions the first break of serve of the match on Court One. He's now just a hold away from levelling his match with Mayer at one set apiece.

1809 : For some reason, Gulbis keeps trying drop shots but all he's doing is getting the lightning-fast Murray to come to the net to hit passes. Coach Niki Pilic looks on baffled by the tactics. However, his man does manage to hold to 30 and the second set stays on serve. First set Murray.

1806 : Murray's run of 19 straight points on serve ends with a double fault. It sparks a mini crisis as 40-0 becomes deuce. But Murray steels himself to level at 1-1 in the second set.

1801 : A much-needed hold for Gulbis halts a run of five straight games. But he needs to start getting to grips with the Murray serve.

1758 : Murray is in the groove here. Four more first serves in make it easy for him. Few are coming back and even when one did in that game, the Briton produced a fine drop shot. He takes the set 6-2. With a first-serve percentage of 85 per cent, he did little wrong in it.

1757 : David Ferrer completes a 6-2 6-2 6-3 win over Fabio Fognini. Easy for the 16th seed today.

1756 : A superb backhand winner and a genius lob over the backhand shoulder get Murray to off to a good start in game seven. Gulbis stays in with some big serves but break point arrives and a high volley into the net from Gulbis allows Murray into a 5-2 lead. Gulbis is losing out in nearly all the rallies now. He has to get the first serve in to stand a chance. He hit some good ones in that game but is still a double break down.

1752 : Murray serves a third straight love game to hold for 4-2. He's looking good now after that shaky start in his opening service game.

1749 : The first break of serve goes to Murray! Gulbis falls 15-40 down after Murray chases down a drop shot. One is saved with a Sampras-esque swinging serve but Gulbis then goes long to hand Murray a 3-2 lead.

1747 : Murray holds to love to make it 2-2. On Court Two, the match is all square between Santoro and Ferrero as the Spaniard - only playing this year on a wild card - has just won the second set 6-3.

1746 : Upset in the making on Court One perhaps. Mayer has won a serve-dominated first set on the tie-break against 10th seed Gonzalez. No breaks before Mayer claimed the breaker 7-4.

1744 : The Williams sisters are through to the second round of the ladies' doubles. The defending champions have just won in straight sets on Court Four.

1743 : An easier hold this time from Gulbis and he sits down at the first break with a 2-1 lead.

1739 : Early trouble for Murray as Gulbis capitalises on a couple of short balls from the Briton. 15-40. He finds the first serves to level at deuce. And he goes ace, ace to finish. 1-1 and the fans breathe a sigh of relief.1737 : Davydenko has indeed moved into a two-set lead against Crivoi.

1736 : Gulbis is taken to deuce in the opening game of the match by Murray, but he manages to finish it off with a big serve down the middle. A threatening start from Murray.

1729 : A quick round-up from the outside courts before we concentrate on Murray. Ferrer is into a two-set lead, while Davydenko is about to serve for the same advantage. Down on Court Two, Ferrero is fighting back against Santoro and leads 4-1 in the second set.

1727 : I mentioned earlier Safina wouldn't have been happy being out on Court Two today, but it's been fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova who seems a bit put out by her trip to the outside courts. She said: "It's fine to put me wherever they want to, they don't have to put me on Centre Court. But with the schedule, this is the weird thing. If you look at the schedule, it's not about only me. Dinara plays on Court Two, Venus (Williams) plays on Court One and girls who are not very high seeds play Centre. I respect them, they're great players for sure, but this is what's weird for me. But in Wimbledon you have to expect anything!"

1725 : Here come the players on Centre. I'm going for Murray in straight sets today. I think he'll want a better performance today - rival Roger Federer has been immaculate so far. Gulbis' form is a worry, but as I say, if can find his best he can make this tough.

1724 : OK, so Ernests Gulbis. I'm sure they are sme of you out there thinking 'who's he?'. Well, Murray needed four sets in his opening match against Robert Kendrick and Gulbis is a far-from-easy opponent too. He's ranked 74th in the world at present which is something of a disappointment. Last year was an impressive one for the Latvian - he reached the French Open quarter-finals and climbed as high as 38 in the rankings - but he's failed to back that up this year despite being tipped by man, including myself, to rise higher. He's still only 20, so time is one his side. Murray has won both of their previous meetings, although it is worth noting their only clash on grass went to a final set - that was at Queen's last season. Murray should win, but if Gulbis plays to his potential he could make things awkward.

1722 : For those of you who weren't with us earlier, Gulbis has been stirring things up ahead of his meeting with Murray. Speaking about their clash at Queen's last year, Gulbis has claimed Murray used a medical time-out as a tactic. The Latvian said: "In the third set, he took a medical time-out when it was five-all. Actually he had nothing (wrong with him). He just broke my rhythm, and I wasn't an experienced enough player to deal with that at the time.'' It seems a bit of a strange comment given Murray had to withdraw from the tournament to next day with a thumb injury sustained during a fall in the match. Murray responded: "I have never done it (used the time-out as a tactic) - it's not part of the sport. It's a form of cheating - it's bending the rules to gain an advantage." Any thoughts? 1718 : All over on Court Three and Mauresmo has seen off Kucova 6-3 6-3. On Centre, the fans are back in and awaiting British star Andy Murray to take to the court.

1717 : A backhand winner wraps up victory for Wozniacki, 6-0 6-4. The teenager was far too powerful for her foe. Switched off a bit in the second set but overall it was an impressive performance. She'll play Ana Medina Garrigues in the third round on Saturday.

1715 : Mauresmo is broken serving for the match at 5-2 against Kucova. She misses a fairly easy forehand on match point, pushing it wide, and so she still has work to do in the second set.

1714 : Down on Court Two, 36-year-old Fabrice Santoro, playing in his final Wimbledon, has taken the first set against former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero on a tie-break.

1710 : Kirilenko wins a lengthy game to level the second set at 4-4. She started swinging from the hip when trailing 3-0. Wozniacki may just have switched off a bit. If she's not careful, she could be into a final set against all the odds.

1709 : Now Davydenko and Ferrer both have breaks of serve in their second sets - they are up against Victor Crivoi and Fabio Fognini repsectively.

1704 : Mauresmo a set and 5-1 up now. The last 32 is within touching distance for the champion of three years ago.

1703 : Over on Court One, it's now Fernando Gonzalez, the 10th seed, against Leonardo Mayer. A bit of an odd choice I though for the showcourts that one, although Gonzalez is a player you really should see if you can - he hits his forehand with the power of Thor!

1701 : This wasn't expected! Kirilenko breaks back from nowhere to get the set back on serve at 3-4. Perhaps Murray will have to wait a while yet.

1658 : A couple of other big names are now on the outside courts and both Nikolay Davydenko (12) and David Ferrer are a set to the good in their second-round matches.

1655 : Mauresmo is now a set and 3-1 up on Kucova. Isn't it a joy to see a female player coming to the net to volley? You hardly ever see it these days.

1652 : Alan Taylor emails with this question. "Andy Murray seemed to imply in a recent TV interview that the problem with British players is the seedings, or the lower-ranked players being drawn against the top players. Would it not be better for 'seedings' to be abolished, and, for all names to be placed in the hat and drawn to see who plays who? OK, you may get Nadal v Federer in the first round, but this may give the lesser players the opportunity of playing longer in the competition. We may even get a different name on the trophy. What do you think?" Well, it's an interesting idea and might be worth trying a other tournaments, but it certainly won't happen at the majors. TV companies want the big matches in the finals, not in round one and seeing Federer-Nadal on day one wouldn't have the same feel. I know darts has an in-the-hat draw for one of their top events - the UK Open - so perhaps it is something a tournament organsier somewhere might want to try, but the other problem with it is the players feel their world ranking deserves the respect that a seeding gets. Also, it would be easy for a ranking to plummet if a player got a run of tough draws. Like I say, Alan, can't see it happening.

1650 : Kirilenko raises her racquet in celebration as she finally gets on the board. Wozniacki sends the ball out the back and Kirilenko halts a run of nine straight games against her.

1647 : I know there will be plenty of Amelie Mauresmo fans out there. She has great record at the All England Club and has just claimed the first set 6-3 against Kucova.

1645 : Oh dear. It's not looking good for Kirilenko. She missed numerous game points in a lengthy second games of the second set and Wozniacki now leads her 6-0 2-0.

1644 : Roddick breaks Kunitsyn to finish things off on Court One. He wins it 6-2 and claims a four-set win. Aside from the third-set blip, Roddick was never convincing today. Next up for Roddick will be Austria's Jurgen Melzer.

1639 : Roddick holds for a 5-2 lead in the fourth set. Just a game away now is the sixth seed.

1634 : Not many fans are watching Wozniacki power on against Kirilenko - they've gone off for food and drink after that Hewitt match and before Murray gets going. Expect him on court in around 30 minutes, I'd say, as Wozniacki has just won a seventh game in a row. The double bagel could be on.

1632 : Not many comments from you today. If you want to send in an emailwith a comment or question, the address is andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1630 : The Wozniacki news will be good for those of you who followed my tips. I've backed her to reach the semis at 4/1. I also tipped Amelie Mauresmo, at 10/1, to progress to the last four. She's just taken to the court against Kristina Kucova and the former champion leads 3-1.

1628 : A one-sided first set on Centre. Wozniacki takes it 6-0 in 26 minutes. She's hitting the ball with her trademark power and Kirilenko has no answers. The Dane struggled in the first round, but it's easy for her so far today.

1626 : The Roddick ship is back on course - he breaks Kunitsyn at the start of the fourth set and leads 2-0.

1618 : So, British singles interest is, as is usual at this time of the tournament, down to Andy Murray. A reminder that he is due on Centre Court after the Wozniacki clash, so probably around 1700-1730 or so if the Dane keeps up this start,

1616 : If you thought Baltacha's defeat was galling, how about this one in the doubles for Brits Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski? They took the first two sets against Johan Brunstrom and Jean-Julien Rojer only t end up losing 6-7 (4/7) 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 6-4.

1614 : Now up on Centre is ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki, the 18-year-old who you may have seen win at Eastbourne last week. The Dane is up against Maria Kirilenko and has raced into a 3-0 lead.

1612 : Bit of a turn up for the books on Court One. Roddick has dropped the third set to Kunitsyn, losing the last three games to go down 6-3. The Russian had some success on the Roddick backhand, his weakest shot, and so it's game on. Roddick leads by two sets to one.

1606 : Eighth seed Gilles Simon is through to the last 32. He lost the first set to lucky loser Thiago Alves, but has hit back and a moment ago clinched a four-set victory. He will now play Victor Hanescu.

1604 : Flipkens finishes Baltacha off with a love hold, clinching victory with a fine drop shot which the Briton didn't see coming. A 7-5 6-1 defeat for Baltacha is hugely disappointing. The errors that came from her racquet after getting to 5-5 were pretty awful really. She will not be happy - and now she's got to face the press, who are scenting blood this week. What's your take on that performance and that of the British generally? Email me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1602 : Despite all the errors, Baltacha manages to hold and avoid the 'bagel' set. A forehand takes her to 5-1 but Flipkens will now serve for the match.

1600 : Baltacha is at least showing some fighting qualities, saving a third match point.

1557 : Another Baltacha error brings up two match points at 15-40. But a big serve and a good angle on the backhand save them both.

1556 : Flipkens again runs around a backhand on second serve to crunch a winner off the Baltacha delivery. 0-30. Up on Court 18, Ana Ivanovic has just posted a 7-5 6-1 victory over Sara Errani so no eary exit for her today.

1553 : A smash into the net makes it seven straight games for Flipkens. 5-0. This is going to add fuel to the fire in terms of British criticism. Remember sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe was speaking about cutting LTA funding this morning. Baltacha's collapse is doing little to present a counter-argument. Remember she was the favourite in ranking terms today.

1551 : Safina is safely through. She was given a tough time in the second set by De Los Rios, but she's just secured a 6-3 7-5 victory. The top seed did not have to face a break point, so she should be pretty happy with that display.

1549 : An awful backhand long gives Flipkens break point and then another error - this one a forehand into the net - leaves Baltacha 4-0 down. This match looks over with Baltacha's game disintegrating.

1546 : It's nowfive games in a row for Flipkens - 3-0 in the second set now. Baltacha needs to hold here.

1544 : Hewitt sinks to his knees with his arms aloft after Del Potro returns long on match points. The 2002 champion has beaten the fifth seed. And that win has really opened the top section of the draw up - it's easy to see Hewitt coming through to a quarter-final meeting with Andy Murray now. Hewitt played brilliantly today and even though Delpo's knee wasn't 100 per cent, it wouldn't have made any difference you suspect.

1542 : Things look to be slipping away from Baltacha. Flipkens breaks to 30 as the Briton double faults. 2-0 second set. Meanwhile, top seed Safina is in a second-set battle. It's 5-5 there.

1540 : Flipkens holds in the opening game of the second set against Briton Baltacha.

1539 : No sooner is Del Potro back all square, than Hewitt breaks again. The Argentine comes up with another unforced error on 30-40 so the Australian will serve for the match for a second time at 6-5.

1537 : There's been a delay in Baltacha's match - she went to the bathroom after the first set and had to battle through the crowds!

1536 : Hooray! British doubles success to report and Chris Eaton and Alex Slabinsky haave easily seen off Spaniards Marcel Granollers and Santiago Ventura, posting a straight-sets win.

1535 : Well, well. Del Potro conjures up his first break of the Hewitt serve of the entire match just when he needed it. The third set is level at 5-5 and one we go.

1534 : Roddick takes the second set 6-2 against Kunitsyn and appears to be cruising towards round three.

1533 : Simon has moved into a two-sets-to-one lead over Alves, while Ana Ivanovic has just edged a tight first set against Errani. Italian failed to serve it out at 5-4 and lost it 7-5.

1532 : Flipkens moves over to crack a forehand winner off the return of serve to create two set points. Baltacha saves the first with a big serve but on the second nets with a forehand. First set to Flipkens 7-5 and once again a Briton cracks when it really matters.

1527 : Flipkens holds her nerve, winning three straight points after falling 15-30 behind. 6-5 the Belgian leads.

1526 : Hewitt is taken to deuce but holds and gives another fist pump. At 5-3 he's just one game from victory over Del Potro.

1523 : Roddick now leads 4-0 in the second set on Court One. He marches on and has lost just five points on his big serve.

1522 : Baltacha comes forward to put away an overhead and level at 5-5 in the first set.

1519 : An hour and a half after missing match point in the second set, 11th seed Agnieszka Radwanska has won through to round three. The Pole comes through a nip and tuck battle with Shuai Peng 9-7 in the third.

1517 : Flipkens holds and opens a 5-4 lead. This is crunch time in this set - and the point where it kept going wrong for the British players in the first round.

1516 : Plain sailing so far from Roddick. He now leads by a set and 2-0 against Kunitsyn.

1515 : Hewitt moves the scoreboard onto 4-2 on Centre. Del Potro is looking tense and not putting a great deal on his shots it seems. The Aussie is just two holds from victory.

1514 : Better from Baltacha. She gets that forehand going again, forcing her opponent back beyond the baseline.

1511 : Flipkens makes it three games in a row with a hold to 15. Baltacha has just gone off the boil a bit in the last few minutes.

1510 : Baltacha finds trouble on serve, a string of errors seeing her fall 15-40 down. She saves one with a fine backhand winner but a double fault follows and the set is level at 3-3.

1508 : Roddick serves out the first set against Kunitsyn, taking it 6-4. No problems for the sixth seed so far.

1507 : More bad news for Britain I'm afraid. The mixeddoubles got under way today and Josh Goodall and Naomi Cavaday are already out, beaten in straigh sets by Lucas Arnold Ker and yesterday's heroine, Gisela Dulko.

1505 : Dinara Safina, the ladies' top seed, takes the first set of her clash with De Los Rios down on Court Two. She struggled in round one, but has not been tested as much so far today.

1504 : Flipkens holds from an awkward 0-30 situation. Balatcha leads 3-2 now.

1501 : A key hold for Del Potro reduces the deifict to 1-2. He may be getting a bit desperate though having lost the first two sets - he tried some serve-volley tactics in that game. Didn't work though.

1500 : A first ace from Baltacha - at 111mph - and another big serve help her move her lead onto 3-1. Confident stuff this from the British number two.

1458 : An update from Court One where Andy Roddick has an early break and leads Igor Kunitsyn 3-2 early on.

1456 : Baltacha gets her big forehand firing in the third game and comes up with a break to 15. As previously mentioned, she is a powerful hitter and it's been an impressive start from the Briton. 2-1 she leads.

1455 : Hewitt gets an immediate break in the third set. Del Potro fights back from 0-40 and saves a fourth break point but a superb lob sets up another chance and Del Potro gifts Hewitt the game with a double fault.

1452 : Baltacha responds with a hold to 15 of her own. A solid start from the Briton. A win here today will see her into the world's top 100 for the first time in her career.

1450 : Better news for Gilles Simon fans. The eighth seed has levelled his match with Alves by taking the second set 6-3. Meanwhile, top seed Safina leads 4-1 against De Los Rios now.

1448 : Flipkens holds to 15, finishing the opening game with her second ace. A good start from the Belgian on a packed Court Four.

1447 : Flipkens, the girls' singles champion here six years ago, gets things under way against Baltacha. We'll keep a close eye on the Briton's match now.

1445 : And Hewitt puts away a high ball after a slip from Del Potro. The fifth seed is in big trouble, trailing by two sets. Good news for the former champion though, who is playing the big points so well.

1444 : Del Potro is left fuming after dumping a return halfway up the net on his first break point of the set. He then goes wide with a backhand so it's set point to Hewitt!

1443 : Another funny line came from this morning's Daily Record, who described the tournament as the All Scottish Championships. Baltacha was brought up for much of her childhood in Scotland - dad Sergei played football for St Johnstone - while Murray, as many of you like to point out, is certainly Scottish. Perhaps that will get the emails flowing again. Email me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com if you have any comments on the action.

1441 : Safina has an early break on Court Two - 3-1 she leads. eanwhile, Ana Ivanovic is now on Court 18 to face Sara Errani. The Serb really had to battle in round one and I'm convinced she's going out early again here this year. Will it be today? We will keep you posted.

1437 : A break-point chance for Hewitt and Del Potro nets with a forehand! He'll serve for the set at 6-5 - the Aussie is really pumped up now. You have to love his competitive attitude. His yellow-shirted fanatics certainly do!

1432 : We will be seeing Elena Baltacha very shortly on Court Four as Jurgen Melzer has just completed a 7-6 6-3 7-6 win over Benjamin Becker (no relation) out there. 'Bally' is up against Kirsten Flipkens and given she's ranked four places higher than the Belgian, us Brits have to be fairly confident. She certainly played well on Tuesday night to beat a player in the top 40, so fingers crossed. Perhaps she can silence some of the critics.

1428 : Del Potro holdsto love for 5-4 second set. No break points in this set yet - not even a deuce. It seems a tie-break is beckoning.

1424 : Good news for Aussies - Sam Stosur has completed a fine comeback against Tatjana Malek. She's just claimed the deciding set 6-4. As for their top male, Hewitt, he trails 3-4 in the second set but it's still on serve.

1421 : A perfectly-placed forehand wraps up victory for Venus. She beats Bondarenko 6-3 6-2. It was an impressive display - she held serve easily and was always threatening with her returns. She's looking good to challenge for a sixth title. Even that strapped knee didn't seem to be an issue.

1420 : News from Court Three where eighth seed Gilles Simon has dropped the first set 7-5 to luicky loser Thiago Alves. The Brazilian only came into the draw when Rafael Nadal withdrew on Friday night.

1418 : Del Potro holds for 3-2 but does seem bothered by his knee. He doesn't seem to planting himself for those big forehands of his as he normally would. Rarely can you afford to be less than 100 per cent against a player like Hewitt. The Aussie took the first set 6-3 for those of you just joining us.

1417 : Top seed Dinara Safina will be next on Court Two after Berdych's win. She faces one of the longest names in the game - Rossana De Los Rios, from Paraguay.

1415 : As in the first set, Bondarenko cracks in her third service game and falls 4-2 down to Venus.

1413 : Hewitt falls 15-30 down but two aces see him hold and level at 2-2. Meanwhile, Berdych has wrapped up a convincing victory over Mathieu - 6-2 6-4 6-4. When he plays like that, Berdych is a tough foe for anyone. The 'Berdman' could meet Nikolay Davydenko next.

1410 : Funny scenes on Centre as Del Potro gets the rough end of a net cord. He charges forward, doesn't make, hurdles the net and give the ball back to Hewitt. On his way back round he tries to lower the net a little with the handle! That should endear him to the crowd, who may not have seen a lot of the 20-year-old French Open semi-finalist.

1408 : Del Potro has the trainer out again on Centre. He slipped again in that previous game which saw him hold for a 2-1 lead.

1405 : No breaks yet in the second set for Venus - the score has moved onto 2-2 there.

1357 : Hewitt serves out the first set against Del Potro to 15, serving three aces in the process, taking the set 6-3. It was an excellent set from the Aussie, playing the big points the better - he faced six break points and won the only one he created on Del Potro's serve. The big Argentine is now getting his knee strapped, so concerns all round for the fifth seed here.

1350 : Williams takes the first set with another break of serve - 6-3 - and it's been pretty easy for her so far. Over on Centre, Hewitt has to save break points again - two this time - but he holds for a 5-2 lead against fifth seed Del Potro.

1349 : Agnieszka Radwanska has just blown match point at 6-5 in the second-set tie-break against Shuai Peng. The Chinese wins three points in a row to take it 8-6 and they are into a decider! Court 18 will also see a third set between Stosur and Malek - the Aussie has hit back to take the second set on a tie-break.

1344 : The 31st seed Victor Hanescu has just secured a straight-sets win over Nicolas Devilder. Meanwhile, another seed, Jurgen Melzer, leads Benjamin Becker by two sets to love on Court Four, so it may not be long until we see Elena Baltacha out there.

1341 : Hewitt takes the first break of serve on Centre. Del Potro left a shot which dropped just inside the baseline - and compounded the error by challenging it. Hawk-eye does it's stuff and decides Hewitt has a 4-2 lead.

1340 : Venus is constantly threatening Bondarenko's serve but Ukranian saves a break point to cut the gap to4-3.

1335 : Hewitt saves four break points and lets out his first 'come on' of the day as he manages to a crucial hold for a 3-2 lead.

1333 : Berdych has an early break in the third set against Mathieu which surely means game over for the Frenchman given his struggles on the return of serve.

1331 : Bondarenko saves one break point with a tremendous crosscourt backhand but then sends a forehand long as Venus breaks through at the third attempt. It had been coming. The American leads 3-2.

1326 : Hewitt gets to 30-30 again before Del Potro slams down a 122mph second serve. Perhaps that's the level the Argentine needs today against a dogged fighter like Hewitt.

1325 : The 20th seed, Tomas Berdych, is now two sets to the good against Mathieu, having won the second 6-4. Mathieu can't handle the Czech's serve and has won just six points on it so far. On Court One, Bondarenko holds for a second time after being taken to deuce.

1323 : Stosur has got the break back against Malek and now leads 5-4. Can she force a final set?

1322 : Hewitt holds to love. He's made the faster start here and leads 2-1.

1320 : Del Potro climbs out of a hole in his first service game against Hewitt. He needs two big second serves to help him hold after being 0-30 down. Big second serves are all well and good but the margin for error is low. As usual there are plenty of yellow t-shirts on Centre ready to cheer the Aussie on.

1318 : A reminder that you can send us your thoughts on the action to: andy.schooler@bskyb.com. I've yet to hear from you on Baltacha's chances today and her impressive win the other night.

1314 : Bondarenko staves off break point in the opening game against Venus and holds.

1312 : Parmentier goes long on match point and Kuznetsova eases into round three. 6-1 6-3 she wins and it was a very comfortable success today for the Russian. She did not have to face a single break point and if she plays like that, she will be around for a few rounds yet.

1309 : Venus is about to start on Court One. She has strapping above and below her left knee today, with strips covering the kneecap too. Perhaps that is a result of a fall on Tuesday. Either way, a bitt worrying for her fans - or those who have tipped an all-Williams final, such as myself!

1302 : Big trouble now for Stosur, who many had expected to continue her impressive form here. She now trails Malek by a set and 3-1 on Court 18.

1300 : Hewitt is putting his sweatbands on right now. The show courts are ready to go.

1257 : Kuznetsova breaks for a 3-2 lead in the second set of her clash. The Russian is a pretty stocky, powerful player - her mother was a world champion cyclist, he father a cycling coach, while her brother rode to silver at the Atlanta Olympics. 'Sveta' may have taken a different rotue to the top, but her two Grand Slam singles titles stand up well to those achievements in what must be a pretty competitive family!

1255 : If you have any more comments to make about all things tennis, the email address is: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1252 : Almost ready to go on the showcourts - Del Potro v Hewitt could be a cracker on Centre. Over on One it's defending champ Venus against Kateryna Bondarenko.

1249 : Berdych also moves a set up. he 20th seed has eased through the opener 6-2 against Mathieu. When he gets his serve going he can be hard to stop and Mathieu is certainly struggling for answers at present - he won only one point on the Czech's delivery in that set.

1248 : Malek serves out to 15, clinching the first set when Stosur pushes a shot long. 6-4 to the German.

1245 : Stosur saves set point while serving at 3-5 but Malek will still get a chance to finish the first set off. She's about to serve for it now.

1243 : An interestingpoint to make on the British lack of success is that other countries are also struggling. Take Australia and America for example. Both are also home to Grand Slam tournaments, yet both are struggling to produce top-quality players. Lleyton Hewitt is the only Aussie in the top 100 on the ATP Tour and it's fair to say he's in the twilight of his career. As for the USA, take out the Williams sisters (both now in their late 20s) and there's not a great deal on the women's side - although note that the US juniors beat GB in both those aforementioned junior tournaments last year.

1240 : Kuznetsova takes the first set 6-1 against Parmentier. People hav doubted whether she can back up her clay feats on the grass, but the Russian is a three-time quarter-finalist in SW19 and has certainly started well today.

1237 : Gary Kruger is not impressed by Gerry Sutcliffe's threat to cut LTA funding. He emails to say: "How can this possibly improve the game in Britain? It should be sustained at a high level, and increased where necessary to provide the results this country deserves. We need someone that can organise the training of talent in a better way to enable students of tennis to gain the best possible start to their careers." I certainly see the logic in that view, but it's also fair to say that British players have been some of the best funded in the world for years thanks to the cash Wimbledon generates. Yet the results still aren't coming. To be fair to Britain's women, as I said on Tuesday, they are certainly getting better and we could well have four inside the top 100 in the near future. The British girls are also flourishing with runner-up finishes at both the Junior Fed Cup and the under-14 World Junior Tennis event last year. So there's certainly reason to be optimistic. There are less encouraging signs on the male side of things though.

1233 : Sam Stosur reached the semis at the French Open earlier this month but she's an early break down to Tatjana Malek today - 4-3 the score. Malek beat Jelena Dokic in the first round, so she is looking for an Aussie double.

1230 : A good start for Kuznetsova on Court Three - the French Open champion has raced into a 4-1 lead. It's a similar story down on Court Two, where Berdych has an early break of serve and leads 3-1 against France's Paul-Henri Mathieu.

1223 : Scott Laight emails to say: "In response to Anne Keothavong's comments, no-one is going to criticise their own players if they win! How can people not criticise a player to at least some extent if they lose to someone a lot further down the rankings? The best way to stop the criticism from home support is surely to actually start winning matches!" Fair point - and Anne's defeat was arguably the most disappointing of the British players. Add your thoughts by emailing me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1210 : Some more interesting comments this morning have come from Anne Keothavong and what the British number one has said may not go down too well with the home fans. There's been plenty of criticism about British performances again this year and Keothavong says the home players could do with more support. "I've been fortunate enough to witness everything at all the grand slams, and definitely in Australia they get really behind their players - and they make a lot of noise. I think players do appreciate that but I guess in England everyone is a little more reserved. They're probably out to criticise their own players rather than get behind them, rather than giving them all the help they can.'' Any thoughts? Email me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1207 : Gulbis has been stirring things up ahead of his meeting with Murray it seems. Speaking about their clash at Queen's last year, Gulbis has claimed Murray used a medical time-out as atactic. It's a form of cheating - it's bending the rules to gain an advantage."

1200 : As the players begin arriving on ther respective courts, you may want to take the chance to email your thoughts to me - I'll publish the best. Tell me how you think Murray and Baltacha will fare. Or perhaps you want to respond to Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe's threat to reduce LTA funding if British results don't improve. "I'm getting tired of the excuses, we need to find a way now to be successful." As you may have read, I was pretty disappointed with the way the Brits were unable to produce wins from good positions on Tuesday and certainly having just two players in round two is a pretty poor show. But is this the right way to go about it by reducing funding? Let me know your views by emailing: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1155 : The outside courts begin at 1200 - and they will as it's another decent day in SW19. It's a little cloudy but sunny spells aare expected. There's a small chance of rain later so perhaps the roof will get its first outing. At noon fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, the recent winner of the French Open, is up against Pauline Parmentier. Tomas Berdych, Agnieszka Radwanska and Samantha Stosur are other big names in early action. One interesting point, top seed Dinara Safina has been dumped out onto Court Two today. I doubt she'll be pleased.

1150 : So what else have we got today? Well, before Murray on Centre could be a couple of crackers. First up, fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro faces 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt in what looks the pick of the second-round men's matches. Del Potro looked very good in his opener, while Hewitt also eased to victory and will fight to the bitter end. That could easily go five sets. Then ladies' ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki takes on Maria Kirilenko. On Court One, Venus Williams opens against Kateryna Bondarenko - she's the sister of Baltacha's first-round victim, Alona. Then it's Andy Roddick against Russian Igor Kunitsyn and finally an all-South American affair between 10th seed Fernando Gonzalez and Leonardo Mayer. The showcourts get under way at 1300 BST.

1147 : One thing I didn't mention there - Baltacha has won both their previous meetings in straight sets. Both were on hardcourts.

1145 : Moving on to Baltacha, who is second up on Court Four against Flipkens. In terms of ranking, the Briton starts the favourite in this one - she's currently at a career-high of 106 in the WTA list, with Flipkens at 110. Baltacha's win ove Alona Bondarenko (a top-40 player) on Tuesday night could well see her crack the top 100 next week for the first time, while a win today would surely guarantee that. Las time I was working I was bemoaning the fact that the British players could not play the big points well, but I got home on Tuesday just in time to see Baltacha finish off Bondarenko. It was a fine display from what I saw. Elena has not had the best of luck with injuries and illness over the years but as the rankings suggest, she's now playing some of the best tennis of her career. She hits the ball harder than many of those outside the top 100 and her first serve is a real weapon. As for Flipkens, she's a former world junior number one who has struggled to live up to her early-career promise. She may have struggledwith expectation in a country that suddenly had Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin on the scene as she was coming through. She did crack the top 100 earlier this year but that's a pretty poor return from a top-ranked junior. This is certainly a winnable match for the Briton.

1140 : OK, so Ernests Gulbis. Murray has won both of their previous meetings, although it is worth noting their only clash on grass when to a final set - that was at Queen's last season. Murray should win, but if Gulbis plays to his potential he could make things awkward.

1130 : Welcome to our coverage of day four at Wimbledon when both remaining British singles players will be in action. Andy Murray faces Latvia's Ernests Gulbis. As usual, he's last on Centre Court so don't expect him to out until around 1630 at the earliest. In the ladies' draw, Elena Baltacha takes on former world junior number one Kirsten Flipkens, of Belgium. We'll preview both matches in a moment.
