Picture Venus - good workout in round one.

DAY TWO COMMENTARY

2123 : Bondarenko saves both match points but Baltacha takes her chance when the third arrives and she goes through much to the delight of those who have stayed on late. That is it from day two, we will be back from 1200 BST on Wednesday. Good night.

2120 : Baltacha is on the brink - two match points!!

2116 : Baltacha noses ahead once again and is 5-4 up. If she can break her opponent she is into round two.

2112 : Bondarenko holds and it is 4-4. The light continues to go and it is a race to get this one finished before play is halted for the day.

2109 : As the gloom descends, we are back on serve once again as Bondarenko breaks straight back to make it 4-3. It is going to be a case of who has the nerve and can reach the finishing line first.

2104 : Baltacha does it yet again - she gets another break again and now leads 4-2.

2100 : Baltacha keeps her nose in front by holding her serve to make it 3-2. It is a struggle though!

2056 : It has all changed for Baltacha in the last 10 minutes and she is broken by Bondarekno. An expletive from the Brit follows!!

2050 : The pressure starts to tell on Baltacha and Bondarenko breaks straight back and it is 2-1.

2045 : It is all going the way of Baltacha at the moment and she breaks Bondarenko to lead 2-0 in the third set.

2041 : Baltacha holds serve in the opening game of the third set.

2036 : Well done Elena! She does need her own serve as she immediately breaks Bondarenko once again and takes the second set 6-3 to level up the match.

2034 : That was a tight service game from Baltacha and Bondarenko breaks back for the first time. All is not lost though for Elena as she still has the upper hand in the set.

2030 : Just a few games left out at the moment and we will focus on Baltacha v Bondarenko. The Brit is going well and has two breaks in the second set as she bids to level things up. She will serve at 5-2 up.

2025 : Ivanovic and Svetlana Kusnetsova have both just posted wins. Ivanovic was made to go to 8-6 in the final set while the latter went through in straigth sets 63 7-6 against Akiko Morigami.

2022 : Russian Marat Safin, the 14th seed, has gone out at the first hurdle in four sets to Jesse Levine on court 18.

2007 : 13th seed Ana Ivanovic is in a real scrap and she is fighting for her life on court four against Lucie Hradecka. Ivanovic is trailing 6-5 in the final set and needs to hold serve to keep alive.

2001 : Eighth seed Gilles Simon of France is on the brink of a place in round two against Bobby Reynolds of the States. He has done it in straight sets, 6-4 6-3 6-3.

1958 : Baltacha has lost the first set to Bondarenko 6-3.

1956 : OK, that's me done for the day. I'll pass over to my colleague David John who will keep an eye on the late action. If you have any comments on Murray's win and performance, email him: david.john@bskyb.com

1955 : Amelie Mauresmo is also through to round two. She's come through 6-2 in the final set against Melinda Czink.

1952 : Murray declares himself happy with his serve and says it was good to play some big points early in the tournament. He seems happy enough with his display.

1950 : The last Briton playing first round singles is Elena Baltacha and she's now trailing Alona Bondarenko 5-3 on Court One.

1949 : Murray fans would not have expected their man to have been given such a tough workout. Certainly it's hard to see how Kendrick lost 6-0 6-0 to Murray on grass in 2006. He served very well and his attacking game caused plenty of problems. Murray found a way to win though so Britain finally has a winner in the singles! he'll need to improve as the tournament goes on - indeed Ernests Gulbis could be a tough foe in the next round. The young Latvian is climbing up the ATP rankings.

1947 : Kendrick is dejected as he nets and when Murray puts away an overhead it's another match point. Kendrick lets rip on the return but it's long and Murray is a four-set winner - 7-5 6-7 6-3 6-4

1945 : Kendrick latches onto a short serve to make it 15-30. This isn't finished yet.

1944 : Plenty of action still going on around the grounds. Svetlana Kuznetsova, the fifth seed, leads her match by a set. Baltacha is now 4-2 down to Bondarenko on Ourt One.

1942 : Kendrick digs deep to hold and Murray will have to serve it out instead. 5-4, fourth set.

1941 : Murray can't finish it off, finding the net as Kendrick charges forward.

1940 : Murray takes command of a rally and ends it with a slapped volley to bring up match point.

1939 : One of the best rallies of the match occurs as Kendrick serves to stay alive. Murray chases a lob back and hits a superb shot on the turn which is too good for his opponent. That helps Murray get to deuce.

1937 : Murray holds again to move 5-3 up and he's one game from victory.

1936 : Dimitry Tursunov has quit his match with Mischa Zverev while two sets down so that's another seed gone He picked up an ankle injury when winning at Eastbourne last week.

1933 : Elsewhere, Baltacha leads 2-1 on Court One, eighth seed Gilles Simon is two sets up on Court Two and Ivanovic has hit back by taking the second set against Hradecka. Mauresmo leads 3-1 in her final set.

1931 : Kendrick keeps in touch at 3-4 but he needs a break of serve - and he's only had one all match.

1928 : At 30-30 Murray comes up with his 20th ace of the match. Another big serve can't be returned and he's into a 4-2 lead - two games from victory now.

1923 : More trouble for Kendrick on his own serve. He finds the net at 30-30 and it's another break point for Murray. The Briton then pulls his opponent round the court, eventually to the net to set up an easy pass. Mum Judy is roaring her approval as Murray goes to his chair with a 3-2 lead. Three holds from here and he's into round two.

1921 : A love hold for Murray ticks the scoreboard onto 2-2. Baltacha, meanwhile, has also just held to love in the opening game of her match. The thing I love about Baltacha is her accent. It's a mix of Russian, Suffolk and Scottish. Her father was Sergei Baltacha, who played football in Russia, Ipswich and then Perth (for St Johnstone) which should help explain that!

1920 : Former champ Mauresmo has lost the second set 6-4 to Czink so they are into a decider.

1918 : Kendrick holds on to move ahead 2-1. It's been a tough old day for Murray and it seems there's still plenty of work to do.

1917 : Wobbles from Kendrick. A foot fault kicks off a double fault to make to 15-30 and when he makes another error it's two break points. The first is saved, Murray goes wide on the second. Deuce.

1915 : The final Briton to take to the court in the singles is Elena Baltacha - she's just warming up on Court One. The fans there are getting an extra match, just as they did last night. Alona Bondarenko, who only just missed out on a seeded, is her foe. Remember no Briton has won yet.

1914 : Kendrick threatens by getting to 30-30 - he's had abit more joy recently on Murray's serve - but the Briton bangs in a forehand and then finishes the game off. 1-1 fourth set. Murray leads two sets to one.

1911 : Kendrick puts away a volley at the net to hold to 30 and start well. He can ill afford to go down an early break.

1909 : Murray will be confident of pushing on to victory from here. Kendrick's serve will surely weaken as the match goes on. It's Kendrick to open the fourth set after a bathroom break.

1905 : Kendrick slices into the net to bring up another set point for Murray. And in a patient next rally he waits for the mistake from Kendrick which comes with a netted forehand. Murray takes the third set 6-3 and leads by two sets to one.

1904 : Murray stays firm in the next rally and saves the break point. Set point follows but Murray goes long with abackhand. Back to deuce and tense moments on Centre.

1903 : My word, Murray is making heavy weather of this, He falls 0-30 down. Kendrick nets and then narrowly misses with another forehand from out wide. 30-30. Then Kendrick comes up with another diving volley - the ball lands just in. Perfect! Break point.

1901 : All over on Court One. Ferrero wins in straight sets - that's a good win against a player as good as Youzhny.

1900 : Kendrick isn't throwing in the towel - a love hold means Murray will have to serve out the set at 5-3. Over on Court One, Ferrero is now serving for the match at 5-3 in the third.

1858 : Ivanovic has lost that first set against Hradecka by seven games to five. A big name is certainly in danger now. How her game was gone off so much I have no idea but its been a frightening collapse having been world number one 12 months ago.

1856 : Murray bangs down two aces to finish off the next game and open a 5-2 lead. This is better from the Briton now.

1854 : Another double fault gives Murray the chance he's been looking for and in the ensuing rally Kendrick pulls a forehand wide. Murray lets out another shout of 'come on', He leads 4-2 in the third set after splitting the first two.

1853 : A double fault starts game six for Kendrick and then Murray races forward to whip a forehand past the American whose drop shot wasn't good enough. 0-30. Kendrick responds with another big serve down the T and he gets lucky with a net cord that drops dead on Murray's side. 30-30.

1850 : Murray is having little trouble on serve, it has to be said. He's faced just that one break point in the first set and there's another easy hold.

1847 : Murray threatens and gets to 30-30 - more shouts of 'come on' follow - but again Kendrick refuses to wilt. He holds and levels the third set at 2-2.

1844 : Mauresmo has taken the first set 6-1 against Czink on Court Three. Ivanovic is 4-5 down to Hradecka.

1843 : Another yell of 'come on' as he quickly produces a love service game. His problem at the moment is Kendrick's serve - Murray has only had three break points so far. That's unusual for someone who is such a good returner.

1841 : From deuce, excellent serves prove unreturnable from Kendrick. It's one set all, one game all.

1840 : Kendrick shows no sign of cracking though and gets himself to 40-30 before a Murray pass makes it deuce.

1839 : Murray gets off to flier in the next game, coming to net and finding a superb angle to flummox his opponent. It's soon 0-30.

1837 : Murray is trying to gee himself up with some shouts of 'come on' as he holds to 15 in the opening game of the third set. The sun is causing some awkward shadows on Centre Court right now, so that was a big hold given he was serving from the sunny patch.

1835 : Well, not many people expected this. Remember Murray beat Kendrick 6-0 6-0 when they met on grass in 2006. It's one set all today and Murray needs to raise his game.

1833 : And the American squares the match by running around his backhand to slap a superb forehand return down the line and past a bewildered Murray. One set all and Murray has work to do. Surely we can't have a clean sweep of British defeats in the singles?

1832 : More big serving from Kendrick takes him to 6-3 and three set points.

1831 : An awful time for a double fault from Murray, The first mini-break goes to Kendrick. 4-3.

1830 : Kendrick miscues a forehand into the tramlines so they change ends locked at 3-3.

1829 : Murray pushes a return long. The Briton then hits the net cord and the ball drops kindly for Kendrick to nudge the ball over for a 3-2 lead.

1828 : Murraystarts the tie-break with a shot off his frame but then responds with back-to-back aces. 2-1.

1827 : Murray gets the set into the tie-break, staying focused despite that argument. He holds to 15. Big moments now for both men.

1825 : Over on Court One, Ferrero has just taken the second set on a tie-break and now leads Youzhny by two sets to love. On Court Three, former champion Amelie Mauresmo has just started against Melinda Czink. Those of you who read by betting preview will know I think Mauresmo could be a decent bet for a good run here. A lot of the top women's seeds are struggling for form and she can certainly play on grass. Let's see how she does.

1823 : Kendrick holds. Murray wanted to challenge the final point but the umpire says he asked "too late". Murray is arguing his case now. Will this affect his rhythm? He's got to serve now at 5-6 to stay in the set.

1821 : Murray responds and shows no signs of getting tight. Easy hold again and it's 5-5.

1820 : Fabrice Santoro has taken out 33rd seed Nicolas Kiefer in straight sets. The Frenchman - one of Andy Murray's favourite players to watch - is playing his last WImbledon before retirement and he'll get at least one more game. That's a good win against a player who has done well here in the past.

1817 : A great diving volley from Kendrick sees him hold to 30 just when he seemed to be in trouble. Boris Becker eat your heart out! 5-4 the American leads an he turns the pressure on Murray.

1814 : A brilliant backhand return from Kendrick aside, it's an easy hold for Murray. All square at 4-4 in the second set now.

1812 : Kendrick holds easily this time to move the score onto 4-3 on Centre. First set went to Murray for those of you just joining us.

1810 : Ana Ivanovic is now on court. Last year she was the top seed here. Now she's the 13th seed, That sums up her poor form. Today she's up against Lucie Hradecka. Given she reached the last 32 here in 2006, don't rule out another loss for Ivanovic today. She's out on Court Four.

1808 : Sure enough, Berdych finishes Bogdanovic off. The stats show the Briton did not force a single break point so it was pretty routine for the 20th seed, who progresses 6-3 6-4 6-4. 'Boggo' now has lost eight times in eight first-round appearances at Wimbledon. Quite why he's still getting a wildcard is a question that has to be asked.

1807 : From deuce, Kendrick slams the door on Murray and clinches a 3-2 lead with a big inside-out forehand.

1806 : Kendrick finds trouble and falls 30-40 down. However, Kendrick stands firm, just. He failed to put away the first volley but smashed away the second.

1804 : Anna Chakvetadze is the latest seed to fall. The 32nd seed hasn't had a great season so it's not great surprise to see her losing Sabine Lisicki, a useful German. 4-6 7-6 6-2 is the score.

1802 : A perfectly-placed serve - wide in the ad court - is an ace for Murray and sees him hold to 30. Two games all in the second set. First set Murray.

1759 : Murray v Kendrick moves along with serve. Murray to serve at 1-2. Berdych does break as the second opportunity and he leads by two sets and 4-3. The end is night for 'Boggo'.

1757 : Bogdanovic falls break point down but Berdych nets. If he can break here, this looks all over.

1751 : A convincing hold to 15 for Kendrick as the second set gets under way on Centre. That first-set blip from Murray was rather strange. Still, as I was saying earlier, he plays the big points well. The other Brits we've seen today would probably have felt the pressure and blown that first set when Kendrick turned up the heat.

1750 : It's now 3-2 Bogdanovic in the third set on Court Two, Berdych leads by two sets to love though. Still to come today - Ana Ivanovic, Svetlana Kuznetsovaand Briton Elena Baltacha.

1749 : Murray loses the first point but aside from that plays a near-perfect game, taking the set 7-5 by bringing Kendrick to the net with a drop shot and then sending the returned ball back past him. Murray is back on course.

1744 : A cracking return on deuce to Kendrick's feet has the American sprawling and brings up break point for Murray. Kendrick then blasts a forehand wide and Murray is back in front. He'll serve for the set at 6-5 now.

1742 : As expected, Berdych has taken the second set - and with it a two-set lead - against British number two Bogdanovic. On Court One, Ferrero has the first set against Youzhny - 6-3.

1740 : Murray fails to wrap the game up at 40-30, going wide with a backhand. Deuce. It's another game point as Kendrick sends a forehand into the tramlines and Murray polishes off the game with a big first serve. A sigh of relief there. 5-5.

1739 : A Hawkeye challenge give Murray and ace. It had been called out. Kendrick then goes long on a return and it's back to 30-30.

1738 : A stunning forehand return is right on the baseline from Kendrick. 0-15 on the Murray serve. Now Murray nets with a backhand after a slice approach. Big trouble now for the Briton!

1737 : Young American Melanie Oudin has claimed a seeded scalp, She's just beaten 29th seed Sybille Bammer, one of the few mothers on the WTA Tour, in three sets.

1736 : An easy hold and Kendrick is in front for the first time at 5-4!

1735 : Over on Court Two the British disease strikes again. Serving at 4-4, just as things get a little important, Bogdanovic loses the game and Berdych will now serve for a two-set lead.

1734 : At 30-30 Murray gets away with a weak looking backhand. It gave Kendrick a chance but he couldn't take it and ended up netting. However, Kendrick still manages to force deuce for the first time. A deep return forces an error from Murray and suddenly it's break point. A double fault from Murray and it's back to 4-4. Did not expect that.

1730 : It's worth updating you on what's happening on Court One - Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, is 5-2 up on Mikhail Youzhny. Remember you can follow all the matches on Centre and One with our live point-by-point scoreboards.

1728 : Classic serve and volley from Kendrick sees him hold. That early break is still proving the difference in this opening set. Murray leads 4-3 in the early evening sunshine.

1726 : Murray loses his first points on serve but fortunately he was already 40-0 up. He holds to 30 and opens up a 4-2 advantage. So far, so good for Murray.

1725 : One other line from today - Agustin Calleri, a well known player on the tour, has decided to quit. The Argentine lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez yesterday and has decided that will be his last match. "I will not take a plane for a long time," he vowed.

1723 : Bang, bang, bang. That's the sound of some big serves from Kendrick - or something like that. He holds to love and it's now 3-2 as the players sit down at the change of ends. Bogdanovic leads 3-2 in the second set against Berdych.

1722 : A Murray backhand down the line wraps up the next game for the Briton, who now leads 3-1. It's already clear who the quality player is in this match.

1720 : More coming out of the media centre and perhaps we've just seen the pressure the British players are under. Asked if she felt she had let people down today, Anne Keothavong cried and had to temporarily leave the press conference. A reminder she lost in straight sets earlier today. Any comments? Email andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1718 : Kendrick is taken to deuce but comes up with two aces to hold and get on the scoreboard. That's one more game than he won when these two last played on grass at Newport, RhodeIsland, in 2006. Out on Court Two, Bogdanovic leads 2-1 in the earlier stages of the second set having lost the first.

1714 : A deft little drop shot from Murray - a shot he's improved immeasurably in the past 12 months - helps him hold to love. 2-0.

1712 : Kendrick goes long with a forehand to hand Murray a break point in the very first game. And a double fault follows to leave Murray 1-0 up. A perfect start for Murray.

1710 : As Kendrick gets things under way on Centre, there are some interesting comments coming out of Dinara Safina's press conference. Speaking about the knee problem she appeared troubled by during her win earlier, she said: "I have been having problems for two months with my left knee and at the end of the second set it was too painful. It was a pain to put all the weight on it and I was struggling but hopefully with treatment it will get better. I will be able to compete because I have a physio here. I will take care of my knee and there is always painkillers." So she will play on, but it doesn't sound good for her title chances. You can't get away with carrying an injury against the Williams sisters on grass, that's for sure.

1708 : Darryll Le Geyt, in East Yorkshire, agrees with me about the Brits. "It strikes me from watching the matches and your commentary that what our plucky Brits lack is the killer instinct. Almost all of them had chances that, if taken, could have put them firmly in control. They seemed to lose the so-called 'big points'. Thus it seems it's the pressure we can't stand rather than the level." Well, Murray knows how to play the big points well. How big the points will get against Kendrick today I'm not sure, but they are warming up and are almost ready to go.

1706 : Berdych wastes little time in serving out the first set against 'Boggo'. 6-3 he takes it and another Brit falls behind. Murray isn't quite our last hope. As I said earlier, Elena Baltacha is due on later.

1702 : Berdych grabs the first break of the match against Bogdanovic outside and opens a 5-2 first-set lead.

1700 : Murray and Kendrick make their way on to Centre Court ready for this match. A good reception for the Briton, not surprisingly. He really won the crowd over here last year with that memorable win over Richard Gasquet, who is now banned for drug use. Let's hope this doesn't go five sets and finish at 9.30pm!

1659 : OK, so let's focus on Murray now. He's up against American Robert Kendrick. The only time they've previously played on grass, Kendrick didn't win a game. However, I'm not sure what happened that day as he can be a dangerous player on the grass - ask Rafael Nadal. He was two sets down to him here three years ago by came through in five. Kendrick has a pretty big serve and likes to come forward, but let's be honest Murray should win this comfortably. He's the world number three, Kendrick is down at 76.

1657 : Jimmy Deane sees plenty of positives in the British performances so far. "It is great to see the Brits taking players of much higher standings to final sets. Yesterday, Laura Robson showed that there is talent in our youngsters and that there can be a bright future for British tennis, if nurtured properly. There seems to be a lack of youngsters coming through the junior tournaments in tennis. If you look at football and rugby especially where, 10 years ago, a teenager in the top teams would be rare now it is common, maybe even expected. I feel that Wimbledon is the only big promotion for tennis in this country, you find it hard to find a free court to practise during July yet two months later, all courts are clear. We need to keep kids involved in the sport over the course of the year and not just during Wimbledon. Hopefully Andy Murray can get far this year and inspire afew people to try the sport and hopefully the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 can help keep attendances at indoor venues around the year." Well, certainly if Murray can't give us a win in this match coming up we are in trouble! Good point also about the ATP World Tour Finals. For those who don't know this is the season-ending event formerly known as the Masters Cup. It's moving to London this year for four years so us Brits will get another chance to see the world's best eight players. Tickets are currently on sale by the way.

1655 : Berdych leads Bogdanovic 3-2 over on Court Two but it's on serve all the way so far.

1651 : Roddick serves out to love at 5-3 and secures a four-set win. That means Andy Murray will be stepping out on to Centre Court in a few minutes' time.

1649 : Safina finally wraps up victory - 7-5 6-3. It was struggle and I'm told she had a knee problem at one stage but a colleague who's been keeping a close eye on that match. Still, the top seed is safely through. Mikhail Youzhny and Juan Carlos Ferrero are next on Court One.

1645 : Safina fails to serve out her match against Dominguez Lino - it's been a real battle for the top-seeded Russian on Court One. The Spanaird serves now at 3-5. Over on Centre, Roddick now leads 5-2 and Chardy must hold serve to stay alive.

1641 : James Dymond emails to say: "To be honest, I don't think we really expected anything from our lowly-ranked Brits, most of whom I've never heard of! It's a bonus if any of them get through the first round. Hopefully Murray will keep our interest going for the whole two weeks." It's probably a fair assessment but my point was they got into good positions - Stoop could easily have won, so could O'Brien and Goodall. But none did. Keep the emails coming to andy.schooler@bskyb.com. As for Murray, he could be on soon. Roddick is 4-2 up in the fourth set and needs just two more games to polish off Chardy.

1639 : The latest Briton to try their luck is Alex Bogdanovic. I think most of us would be amazed if he won today though. First of all he's facing the 20th seed Tomas Berdych, secondly he's never won a match at Wimbledon and anyone who's seen him in Davis Cup will know he's not the best at handling the big occasion. They are just under way on Court Two.

1635 : I don't think I mentioned Lleyton Hewitt had wrapped up victory over Ginepri. He was 4-2 down in the first set but then lost just two more games. The 2002 champion is a 6-4 6-1 6-1 winner and will now face Juan Martin Del Potro in round two - that should be one of the best matches of the last 64.

1634 : Haven't had much feedback lately. How about telling me what you think of the Britons? Some have played well - you couldn't have predicted Georgie Stoop taking Vera Zvonareva to a third set - but they've failed to deliver at the key moments. Email me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com about that or any other tennis topic.

1632 : Safina is now 4-1 up on Dominguez Lino and serving. The top seed seems set for victory. She remains withour a Grand Slam title remember. Over on Centre, Roddick seems riled by the loss of that third set and he's channeled his aggression to secure an early break of Chardy's serve. 2-0 he leads.

1625 : Victor Hanescu has come through the longest final set so far - he's beaten Ivan Navarro 12-10 in their decider. That final set lasted 89 minutes.

1623 : Chardy serves out to 15 and Roddick finds himself in a fourth set! Murray will have to wait in the locker room for now. Chardy immediately calls for the trainer who massages his ankle - the Frenchman slipped over earlier so that may well be related. His movement hasn't been effected so far.

1621 : Good defence from Llodra helps him turn the 15-40 rally around and when Goodall nets with a forehandanother Briton is out of Wimbledon. All very predictable I'm afraid. So many Brits have got into decent positons but when things get tight and the big points are played they don't seem to be up to it. The evidence is there from the past two days. Still there's not been a single British winner in the singles.

1620 : A big serve gets Goodall to 15-30 but then a volley into the net hands Llodra two match points.

1619 : Murray fans, you may have to wait a little longer. Chardy has just broken the Roddick serve to take a 5-4 lead in the third set. Goodall trails 0-30 in a game he must win.

1616 : A love hold for Llodra sees him move 5-4 ahead. This is where serving first is such an advantage. Any slips on serve now from Goodall and he's out of the tournament.

1614 : Some good serving from Goodall makes it 4-4 on Court Two. Remember this two had a rest overnight - it was a set apiece overnight - so they shouldn't be too tired in this fifth set. We could be in for a lengthy decider.

1612 : Roddick moves 4-3 ahead in the third set. Not much drama over on Centre with both the American and Chardy holding easily in this set. Remember Andy Murray is on after them - he could be just two games away.

1610 : Goodall levels at 3-3. On Court One, Safina has an immediate break in the second set - it seems she's grabbing control of that one now having won four games in a row.

1605 : Aided by a superb forehand pass, Goodall creates the first break point of the final set against Llodra but a mis-hit backhand costs him. The Frenchman holds for a 3-2 lead.

1604 : Safina takes the opening set against Dominguez Lino 7-5 after breaking serve in game 11, but she's been given a real test by the Spanish baseliner.

1557 : Solid serving at the start of the decider between Goodall and Llodra. The Frenchman leads 2-1 and no signs of a break so far.

1553 : Roddick takes the tie-break 7-3. He always looked in control of that, as he does so often in the breakers with his big serve, and he now looks primed for a straight-sets win. Andy Murray could be on shortly then...

1551 : Only Elena Baltacha stands between Britain and a whitewash in the ladies' singles now. She's due to face Alona Bondarenko later but she's a fine player, ranked 33 in the world.

1549 : ...and he takes it! Josh Goodall is into a fifth set against Michael Llodra. Could this finally be the first British win? We'll keep an eye on that.

1548 : Roddick holds to force the tie-break on Centre. 6-3 6-6 there. It's another Goodall set point on Court Two...

1546 : Goodall saves another break point in what really looks like a key game at 5-3 in the fourth set against Llodra.

1545 : Keothavong is out. Frankly a pretty feeble collapse from the British number one who was the only British woman ranked higher than her first-round foe. She led 5-3 in the first set and held set point but won just two more games. 7-5 6-2 in the final score. Grass isn't her best surface but even still. Mayr progresses to round two.

1544 : Set point goes begging for Goodall. Back to deuce. Chardy secures at least a tie-break against Roddick - he leads 6-5 now in that second set.

1542 : Goodall saves a break point to get to deuce. Keothavong is just a game from defeat, serving at 2-5.

1539 : Goodall breaks Llodra and will serve for the fourth set at 5-3. Come on Josh, surely we can get one British winner!

1537 : Chardy saves a third break point and holds for a 5-4 lead. He's played much better in the second set after a nervy start in the first. Roddick knows he's in a match now.

1535 : On Court Three, Lleyton Hewitt is now two sets up on Ginepri. If he wins, the 2002 champion will play Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round which would be an intriguing battle.

1534 : Onthe showcourts, Chardy has just saved two break points against Roddick at 4-4 in the second set. On Court One, Safina isn't having things all her own way against Dominguez Lino - the Spaniard has just broken serve to level at 3-3 in the opener.

1532 : Keothavong breaks a run of seven straight games against her to make it 3-1 against Mayr in the second set. Out on Court Two, Goodall is keeping the fourth set on serve as he tries to battle back and win in five.

1528 : Stoop goes long and it's game over. Another near miss for Britain - how often do we say that? Too often. I saw quite a bit of that match and Stoop was honestly right there for the vast majority of the contest against the seventh seed. But she couldn't finish things off. The experienced players seems to play the big points so much better than the Brits. With British number one Keothavong now a set and 3-0 down it's beginning to look like no Briton, Andy Murray excepted, will win in the singles.

1527 : Zvonareva isn't for blinking. She's moved to 40-0 and holds three match points.

1525 : As the British challenge collapses again, I can tell you Keothavong is now 2-0 down in the second set to Mayr and looking in big trouble.

1524 : Another break chance for Zvonareva and this one is converted when Stoop nets with a backhand. The Russian will serve for the match at 5-4.

1523 : Stoop gets to game point but is pulled back to deuce.

1521 : But the Russian can't convert - a big serve produces an error off the return. Tense moments here on Court 18.

1520 : Oh dear - double fault brings up break point to Zvonareva.

1519 : A great cross-court forehand from Stoop is followed by a big serve. 30-30.

1518 : Is this Zvonareva making her move? She gets to 0-30 on the Stoop serve for the first time in a while.

1516 : Zvonareva holds from 15-30 down against Stoop to level up at 4-4. The Russian hasn't played a great deal of late due to an ankle problem, but this is Stoop's first-ever Grand Slam singles match so however rusty her opponent is, this is a fine display.

1513 : 0-40 and three set points for Mayr. Keothavong goes wide and having held set point the Briton loses the opener 7-5. Perhaps Georgie Stoop can lift home spirits. She's still going well against Zvonareva ot on Court 18. She's just held for a 4-3 lead in the final set. This really would be a massive upset if the British number five were to prevail.

1512 : Keothavong trails for the first time against Mayr - the Austrian did hold for 6-5. And, surprise, surprise, it's now 0-30. The Briton's game is falling apart after what was a good start.

1510 : Hewitt seems determined - when isn't he? - to put that champions' graveyard curse to bed. He's just taken the first set against Ginperi 6-4 having been 3-0 down in the early stages. On Court One, ladies' top seed Dinara Safina has just started her clash with Lourdes Dominguez Lino. Safina lost in the recent French Open final but isn't at home on the grass. She's made some pretty negative comments about the surface prior to the touranment so may not be in the right mindset to go far here.

1508 : Keothvong misses two more break points. She's got to play these big points better. I can already see her losing this set on a tie-break. 5-5 deuce. Bad news from Court Two, Goodall has lost four games in a row and is now two sets to one down to Llodra.

1507 : Roddick wins the first set 6-3. No problems for him on Centre.

1505 : News of a seeded casulaty - Alize Cornet (22) is out after losing 6-4 in the final set to Vera Dushevina.

1503 : Keothavong can't save the second break point. A solid backhand is too good for the Briton and it's back to 5-5. Is that set-point miss playing on Keothavong's mind?

1502 : Trouble for Keothavong at 15-40 but she comes forward to crack a drive volley which saves one.

1500 : Keothavong will have to serve for the first set at 5-4 as Mayr holds. On Centre, a lucky net cord helps Chardy get one of the breaks back against Roddick. The American did not drop his serve once at Queen's Club recently but given he's still 5-2 up it shouldn'y unduly concern him.

1457 : Keothavong sees set point come and go against Mayr, although even if she doesn't claim this game she will be able to serve for the match. Meanwhile, another Brit, Georgie Stoop, is back on court for her clash with Vera Zvonareva. They split sets last night which was a terrific achievement for the Briton. She's the world number 185. Zvonareva is the seventh seed. Stoop currently 2-1 up in the decider - on serve.

1451 : All over on Court One. Del Potro wins 6-3 6-1 6-2 and that's about as convincing as you get in the men's game. Clement is a former Australian Open finalist so is hardly an amateur but he was totally outplayed today. Del Potro did not face a break point in the entire match and if he keeps serving and playing like that he'll take some stopping. Remember he's seeded to play Murray in the semis.

1450 : Roddick moves 4-0 up on Chardy who looks all at sea and out of his depth on Centre Court.

1449 : Also good British news coming out of that new Court Two down the bottom end of the grounds. Josh Goodall has broken Michael Llodra's serve to open a 4-2 in their third set, the match having been hed over from yesterday. On Court One, Del Potro is about to serve for the match against Clement.

1446 : Roddick has flown out of the traps on Centre. An immediate break of the Chardy serve makes it 2-0. Andy Murray will be happy - he's on after that match and if it keeps going like this he could be on soon!

1444 : The spectators are crammed in around Court Four to see Keothavong and they've seen the Briton make a confident start. She's looked in good nick so far and a love hold there means she now leads 4-2.

1441 : Roddick opens his campaign with a love service game using that big serve to full effect against France's Jeremy Chardy. I can't say Roddick's brand of tennis is the most exciting, but it is often effective on the grass.

1437 : Former champion Lleyton Hewitt is out on court now. He's over on Court Three, the famous 'Graveyard of Champions'. It is being demolished next month, but you feel it may just have one more victim to claim. I remember Pete Sampras being stunned by Goerg Bastl there in 2002. Hewitt faces Robby Ginperi today and the American is no mug. Watch this space.

1435 : Del Potro nows has a break of serve in the third set agains Clement. Given the Frenchman has yet to fashion even one break point, his time in SW19 looks up.

1432 : Keothavong's clash wit Mayr has produced three straight breaks of serve and the Briton leads 2-1. Anne has enjoyed a terrific last 12 months to move up the rankings. She cracked the world's top 50 a few weeks ago and although she is now back down to 51st, it's still a fine achievement - the best by a British woman for some time. She made the third round of last year's US Open and it's certainly good see a home player here as of right and not relying on a wild card. You can send us your thoughts on the improvement of Britain's women to: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1425 : Venus puts away a forehand down to line to wrap up a 6-3 6-2 victory. The second set was tougher than the scoreline suggests and Venus may well be happy with what was a decent workout. Having said that sister Serena said yesterday she'd rather have won easily.

1422 : Venus is about to serve for a place in round two. She's a set and 5-2 up on Voegele on Centre. Andy Roddick will follow that match and then Andy Murray. Plenty to lookforward to!

1421 : On Court Two next will be another Briton Josh Goodall - his match with Michael Llodra was halted due to fading light at one set all last night. Another match suspended yesterday was Tommy Haas v Alex Peya. Only two more games were needed today fo Haas to wrap up a four-set win.

1419 : Del Potro seems to easing to victory. He's now 6-3 6-1 up on Clement. A bit one-sided so far on Court One. Keothavong is just starting her clash with Mayr, we'll keep a close eye on that one.

1418 : One player we haven't mentioned yet is Fernando Gonzalez. Always an attractive player to watch, he's up by two sets to love against Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili. Gonzalez, of Chile, has a massive forehand and it helped him to the last four of the recent French Open.

1415 : O'Brien slaps her racket against the grass as she goes wide, leaving her facing two match points at 40-15. And when she returns long, Benesova has victory - 6-2 5-7 6-4. It was a scrappy match but the higher-ranked player pulls through. O'Brien will be left disappointed - that match was there for the taking really.

1413 : On the show courts, Venus has her break back in the second set, while Del Potro is 5-0 up and set for a two-set lead against Clement.

1410 : Trouble for O'Brien. She is outrallyed from the baseline as benesova moves to 15-40. And when O'Brien goes well long, Benesova is left serving for the match at 5-4. Out on Court Two, Wozniacki fans can breathe a sigh of relief - the 18-year-old has taken the final set 6-1 against 38-year-old Date Krumm. She's literally old enough to be her mother, but the youngster rules today.

1408 : I'm keeping a close eye on O'Brien now Benesova comes up with two big serves to hold to 30 and level at 4-4. I have to say the Czech is in the shortest of skirts - not sure what this says about me. O'Brien is in a good old Fred Perry dress. Fashion update over.

1406 : I may have spoken too soon about Venus - she's been broken back and it's 2-2 in their second set. O'Brien edges 4-3 up on Benesova. If she can just find her best in the next couple of games she'll win this.

1404 : Jankovic comes through a tough test against Goerges. She fought back from 5-2 down in the second set to force a tie-break and she raced through that 7-0 to move into round two. Not a great start for the sixth seed though - she's been very in and out this season and I can see her falling before the business end of the touranament.

1402 : The crowd won't be going anywhere on Court Four you feel. Following Evans on there will be British number one Anne Keothavong, who is facing Austria Patricia Mayr. In ranking terms, the Briton is the favourite here which makes a change!

1400 : Davydenko wraps up a 6-2 6-3 6-3 win. Briton Dan Evans was outclassed to be honest, as is so often the case with British wildcards. He saw today how much better he needs to be to compete at this level and it's quite a lot. Del Potro has a break in the second set against old Frenchman Clement, while Wozniacki is now a break up on Date Krumm in the final set. Surely the 38-year-old is beginning to feel it after two hours in what are pretty warm conditions today. Not exactly what we got in Melbourne this year mind. Then it was up to 40 degrees Celsius!

1358 : Benesova refuses to panic and gets stuck into that service game from O'Brien. Back to 3-2. Who knows who is going come through this one? I'd imagine the player that can put together a decent 10-minute spell as it's been very up and down.

1356 : There's a roar on Court 14 and it means O'Brien has broken Benesova for a 3-1 lead in the final set. A win here would be great news for the Briton, who is trying to bridge a ranking gap of more than 70 places. Venus breaks on Centre and appears to becruising to victory.

1355 : Dan Evans has lost his serve and Davydenko will now surely push on for a straight-sets win. It's 4-3 in the third. Over on Court One, Del Potro takes the first set off Clement, 6-3.

1353 : The comments seem to have dried up a little. With Venus on court, perhaps you'd like to tell me how she rates among the Wimbledon greats. You can't argue with five singles titles! Martina Navratilova has nine. Could Venus possibly equal that record? She's currently 1-0 down in the secons set by the way. Email me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1351 : Dokic hooks a forehand into the tramlines and her match is over! The Aussie falls at the first hurdle - 6-2 in the final set to Malek.

1349 : Jankovic has fought back and got the second set back on serve against Goerges, but Dokic is now 5-2 down in her final set against Malek. She's on the brink.

1345 : It's real ding-dong stuff in that O'Brien match. The Briton hits straight back to level the decider at 1-1.

1343 : Venus sends a backhand winner into the corner to take the opening set 6-3 against Voegele. It's been pretty dominant stuff from Williams, as expected. She's well in command.

1341 : Benesova breaks the O'Brien serve immediately at the start of the decider to lead 1-0. Fellow Brit Evans is fighting hard to hang in there against Davydenko - he leads 2-1 on serve in the third set - but from what I've seen Davydenko looks poised to finish this in straights.

1337 : I 'bigged up' Caroline Wozniacki earlier so I'm glad to report she has hit back against the veteran Japanese Kimiko Date Krumm, winning the second set 6-3. The Dane is making hard work of things out on Court Two though. We'll keep you posted.

1335 : Voegele breaks the Williams serve for the first time, but surely at 2-5 down she's left herself too much to do.

1334 : It's third time lucky for O'Brien and she takes the second set against Benesova! Good stuff from the Briton ranked 76 places below her opponent. Into a final set they go.

1333 : It's saved by Benesova but the Briton soon creates another chance which is also missed. Elsewhere, Jelena Jankovic is in a spot of bother at 5-2 down to Julia Goerges in the second set The sixth seed won the opener.

1332 : Plaining sailing so far for Venus - 5-1 now on Centre. Over on Court 14, O'Brien moves to set point at 6-5!

1330 : More feedback on Murray. Chris Stanley says: "He has a good chance to win it and he has no need to worry about Federer, he's beaten him already. If he can stay injury free, he has a very good chance." Chris is also encouraging other debates - I have save things for other days Chris, so all in good time! - but I would be interested to hear if anyone is tipping any of the outsiders to win the title. All the talk is of Federer v Murray in the final, but is it really nailed on? Email: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1328 : Benesova levels at 5-5 against O'Brien. Key moments now in that one.

1326 : Venus breaks to lead 3-1. Voegele's weak serve is costing her at present - there's nothing Venus likes more than getting stuck into a poor serve with a cracking return.

1324 : While Venus moves 2-1 up on serve on Centre, Juan Martin Del Potro has an early break against Clement on Court One. The fifth seed isn't really being spoken about much but he's taken Rafael Nadal's place at the top of the draw and could meet Murray in the last four. He made the semis of the French Open recently and can play on grass - I saw him give Federer a decent match here a couple of years ago. Keep an eye on big Juan.

1322 : O'Brien ends a run of four straight games against her to edge back in front at 5-4 against Benesova. The Czech must hold firm now or she's into a decider.

1320 : Davydenko claims the second set against BritonDan Evans and leads 6-2 6-3. He broke in game eight and has just served out to 30, clinching the set with an ace. This looks pretty routine for the Russian.

1317 : Venus twice comes from break point down to hold serve in the opening game on Centre. Perhaps she will not get things all her own way today. She certainly struggled at the recent French Open, but the grass is a different kettle of fish. Still not sure where that saying comes from!

1316 : O'Brien is beginning to look very British. She's just lost another service game and her 4-0 lead is down to 4-3. The second set is back on serve, Benesova having won the first. Meanwhile, Jelena Dokic has been taken into a final set by Malek, who has just won the second 7-5.

1314 : Stuart Reid - a solid Scottish name if ever I heard one - is on now and he's the first to come up with the line "Murray's Scottish, not British". Congrats Stuart. He adds: "Is it not typical of the Great British public that as soon as we have a sportsperson who is actually very good we start to get on his back? Yes, Murray is cocky but to be the best you need a touch of arrogance, like Tiger Woods or Ronaldo. That is why he is so good, let's wait to see how he gets on but to liken him to Tim Henman is a huge mistake as Murray WILL win a grand slam sooner or later." OK, so there are plenty of you who like Murray after all. But no-one is telling me how he's going to do? Can he really beat Roger Federer, one of the greatest grasscourters of all time? Perhaps he won't have to. Email your thoughts to: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1310 : Benesova retrieves one of the breaks and cuts the deficit to 4-2 against O'Brien.

1307 : Is a shock on the cards on Court Two? Eastbourne champion Caroline Wozniacki has dropped the first set 7-5 to Kimiko Date Krumm. That's quite a story. Not only is Wozniacki a top-10 player (and my tip to reach the semis!) but Date Krumm is now 38 years old. She made a comeback to the tour last year. You may remember her being ranked fourth in the world back in 1995. This would be some win for her.

1305 : Better stuff now from O'Brien - she's now bagged a double break for a 4-0 lead against top-40 player Benesova. Can she force a decider? She's playing some decent stuff, even if it is a little patchy out on Court 14.

1303 : The Murray feedback continues to come in. Chris Stanley says: "To be honest, I find the whole Andy Murray subject irritating beyond belief. What is it with the British public? We all seem to love a trier, someone who will give it everything they've got but havent got the talent to make it to the top (see Henman and every other Brit tennis player since the year dot) but as soon as someone comes along with the skill, belief, talent and right attitude to actually win it, everyone slags them off. Unbelievable." And Steven Harkins adds: "Andy Murray is the most exciting individual sports star to come out of Britain in a while. The problem 'Middle England' have is that he is Scottish and not English, and makes no bones about making that clear. If his blood ran white and red he would be hailed as a hero and sang from the heights of Blackpool Tower... or Big Ben or some such. I for one am delighted middle England dislike him, because it makes it less likely that the media will ruin his chances of becoming a success, like they have done with the English national football team. Murray Mania ain't all hype. He has more talent, versatility and personality than Henman ever had... and will soon have more trophies and acclaim! Come on Murray!" A reminder Murray plays Robert Kendrick on Centre Court later. He's third match on after Venus and Andy Roddick's matches.

1300 : Defending champion Venus Williams steps out on to Centre Court for her opener with Stefanie Voegele. She has five Wimbledon singles titles in her collection and only sister Serena is ahead of her in the betting this year. Venus takes some stopping on grass and she'll be there or thereabouts this year I'm sure. I'm predicting another all-Williams final. Any thoughts? Email them to: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1259 : Better news for O'Brien - she's grabbed a early break and leads 2-0 in the first set. Bad news for Evans though, Davydenko has hit back to level their second set at 2-2.

1257 : Back to the action and Jelena Jankovic, usually a pretty popular player with the fans, has taken the first 6-4 against Julia Goerges. Jankovic plays with a smile on her face but perhaps the fans this year will remember her pretty graceless comments made here last year when she was moaning about being put on an outside court!

1254 : Here's more Murray feedback, this time from Jack Morris. "I don't follow tennis massively but I do enjoy the four major tournaments each year and I really struggle to see what the problem people have with Murray is all about. Yes, he may be moody, but many great players are. Look at Sampras - he was also not the most charismatic person. But Murray shows guts and determination and fight - all the things a champion needs to have to go with the talent. People compare him to Mr 'nice guy' Henman, but ask Henman if he'd rather been more successful on the court in exchange for his nice guy approach and he'd bite your hand off! Give Murray a break and support the guy. He's British and we've been crying out for a British star for years, so let's not demolish the one hope we have." Well put is my personal opinion of that. ot sure Andy would be too pleased to be labelled English by Bea though! As for his World Cup comments, has anyone English been to Scotland? I have family there and most of them don't want England to win anything!

1252 : OK, so the lower-ranked Brits aren't doing the business - no surprise there then - but Andy Murray is up later. He won't let us down will he? Bea Atkinson certainly doesn't think so. "I really do think that Any Murray could win Wimbledon this year. I think his comments when the World Cup football was on a while ago was out of order but he has in fact got an English girlfriend and now says he likes us so, I for one, will be supporting him at Wimbledon and certainly wish him well. His game has improved so much in the last year and it would be great to see an Englishman (Scot) win for us."

1249 : Benesova serves out to take the first set 6-2. The statistic that has hurt O'Brien most is break points won - none out of 10.

1247 : Evans breaks at the start of the second set. Davydenko lost a high ball in the sun and sent a smash into the net to give Evans a 1-0 lead.

1246 : Not a good start for the home players today. O'Brien drops serve again and Benesova is left serving for the set at 5-2. Disappointing after a good opening spell from the Hull girl.

1244 : Davydenko breaks serve again to finish off Evans in the first set. The Briton is getting only 52 per cent of his first serves in - he has to serve well to stand any chance against a player in the world's top 20. Davydenko doesn't have a great grasscourt record but he's looking too good for Evans. No real surprise there given the Briton is only here on a wildcard.

1242 : Davydenko has got his break of serve back against Evans and at 5-2 up appears to heading towards a one-set lead.

1239 : Jelena Dokic has just taken the first set against Tatjana Malek by six games to three. The Aussie was responsible for one of the great shocks at the All England Club when she beat top seed Martina Hingis in round one back in 1999. She's had all sorts of problems since but made the quarter-finals of the Australian Open this year and is onthe way back it seems.

1236 : So here we go on Murray. I'd been waiting for an email along these lines. Alex Cross says: "It's not just middle England that dislikes Andy but some of us Scots as well. He just doesn't have the likeability factor or grace a Henman did. I am more interested in how Keothavong and Baltacha get on. Murray has no dignity. Old big 'ed." Given the comments that came in last year when I was doing this commentary I expect there are people who agree. But surely there are also many who love Murray's attitude. After all he's a real fighter isn't he? Oh and don't get me started on how he's Scottish and not British! Send your feedback to andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1234 : Better stuff from Evans. He's broken back against Davydenko, much to the crowd's delight. 3-2 now in their first set.

1227 : O'Brien is made to pay for missing those chances in the previous game. Benesova breaks and earns a 2-1 lead.

1221 : Break points aplenty for O'Brien in Benesova's first service game but the higher-ranked left-hander stands firm. Still an encouraging start for the Briton. As I mentioned yesterday, these are fairly good times for the British women's game. Four players inside the top 130 may not sound great but it's considerably better than in previous years. Anne Keothavong, who plays later today, is up at 51 in the world and has been to the semi-finals of tournaments on the WTA Tour this season. The British game gets plenty of criticism but the current crop of ladies deserve some credit.

1216 : Poor start for Dan Evans against Davydenko. He drops serve straight away and finds himself 3-0 down in the early stages against the 12th seed.

1210 : O'Brien is off to a solid start against Benesova, the world number 35. The Briton - down at 108 in the WTA rankings - holds serve in the opening game.

1200 : We have players on court around the grounds. We'll keep a particular eye on Britons O'Brien and Evans in the early stages today.

1150 : As always, feel free to email us with any comments or questions. Today I'd be particularly interested to hear what you think of Andy Murray's title chances. Can he really become the first British male to triumph here in more than 70 years? Email me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com

1140 : For those of you who weren't following the late action yesterday, the best British performance of the day came from Georgie Stoop. As the light faded the British number five won the second set against seventh seed Vera Zvonareva to force a decider. That means they will be back later for their final set. Josh Goodall must also return to complete his clash with Michael Llodra. They are also level at one set all.

1135 : Of course play starts at 1300 BST on the showcourts but an hour earlier on the outside courts. Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki are among the high seeds out at 1200 - for those of you who don't know, Wozniacki is a rising star. Just 18 and Danish, she won at Eastbourne last week and looks to have a big future in the game. A possible dark horse this year. There's also early British interest with women's number three Katie O'Brien taking on Iveta Benesova, while Dan Evans faces a tough task against 12th seed Nikolay Davydenko. Alex Bogdanovic, Anne Keothavong and Elena Baltacha all play later.

1130 : The big name on the showcourts today is Venus Williams. As is traditional on the first Tuesday - ladies' day - the defending champion opens on Centre. She face Switzerland's Stephanie Voegele. Andy Roddick v Jeremy Chardy follows and then Murray. On Court One, fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro takes on French veteran Arnaud Clement in the first match. Then it's top seed Dinara Safina against Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino before former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero facesMikhail Youzhny in what could prove to be one of the most competitive first-round matches.

1125 : OK, so what's on today? Well, Andy Murray is the third match on Centre Court against American Robert Kendrick.

1120 : Good news! The weather is again good. There are some white clouds in the sky over the All England Club but the forecast is for things to get better and better throughout the day. Who needs a roof?
