2120 : That's the final action of the day. Several matches were suspended due to the fading light and Britons Josh Goodall an Georgie Stoop are among those who will have to return tomorrow. Also in action on Tuesday will be Andy Murray - be sure to log back on then to follow all the action. Plays starts at 1200 BST.
2118 : And a backhand winner from Johansson clinches victory. 7-5 7-6 is the final score. South can take pride from showing plenty of fighting spirit but Johansson was just that little better today. No surprise in this one but it was a decent evening session for the British players.
2117 : But it all goes wrong for South, both points go against the South serve after some impressive rallying from Johansson. It's now match point.
2116 : South keeps her eye on a high looping ball, allows it to bounce and then blasts a forehand which Johansson can't get back. 5-4 and two serves for South to finish the set off.
2115 : A forehand winner from Johansson gets the tie-break back on serve. And another winner this time on the backhand side, levels things up at 4-4. Key moments now.
2114 : A second double follows immediately! Is the Frenchwoman choking here? 3-2 to South as her foe slings her racquet.
2113 : A double fault from Johansson hands the advantage back. 2-2.
2111 : A shot into the net from South sees her concede the first mini-break. 0-2.
2110 : On they play. The breaker will be the last action. South needs it to force a final set.
2109 : Back on Court One, Mel South continues to fight and fight hard. Serving at 5-6, she holds to 15 to force a second-set tie-break.
2107 : Zvonareva goes wide with a backhand to give Stoop set point! More great play from Stoop ends with a forehand winner and they will be back tomorrow for a final set. It's been tremendous stuff from the British number five. 7-6 4-6 they've split the sets.
2106 : Is Zvonareva rattled about this light? She's at 30-30 on serve and Stoop's backcourt game is looking in great shape.
2105 : South holds. She's really shown guts today.
2104 : Over on Court 18, Zvonereva is moaning about the light following Stoop's service hold. The Russian needs to hold to stay in the set. It looks like this will be the final game of the day.
2103 : South falls down match point at 30-40 on Court One. But Johansson dumps a backhand into the net and it's back to deuce.
2101 : A bit of a surprise out on Court Five where Arantxa Parra Santonja has just beaten Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4 6-4. The Thai player won the Ordina Open only on Saturday in Holland and has a fine grasscourt record, but the Spaniard has proved too good this evening.
2059 : Johansson holds to love to move 5-4 up on South. Just one game from victory and you feel there's not much play to go now. It's dark alright. Zvonareva makes it 4-4 on Court 18.
2056 : Stoop looks to be enjoying this. She holds for 4-3 and scampers back to her chair. From what I've seen she's done herself proud - remember the ranking gap here is more than 150 places!
2054 : Johansson is now 4-3 up in the second set. Can she clinch victory tonight before the ligh goes or will South hang in there and force her to come back tomorrow?
2052 : Stoop storms back from 40-0 down on the Zvonareva serve to force deuce but Zvonareva stays firm and manages to level at 3-3. The Briton should keep hanging in there as the Russian can be notoriously fragile mentally - I've seen her in tears on the court before.
2050 : Stoop holds for a 3-2 lead; Johansson does the same in her second set against South. It's certainly getting gloomy. I'm not sure there'll be a great deal more play tonight.
2048 : After much debate - and some swearing from Llodra - the players get their way on Court Two and trudge off. They will be back tomorrow at one set all. The crowd boo but play has been suspended there.
2047 : Stoop is not going away quietly on Court 18. It's 2-2 in the second set with the Briton pushing seventh-seeded Zvonareva hard.
2045 : The ATP supervisor is out on court in the Goodall match. It seems the pair want to stop and come back tomorrow. The official says there's still at least 30 minutes of play possible yet, despite the fading light. It has been quite cloudy today so I doubt they will be playing until 2130 this evening as they have done on occasions in the past.
2044 : And forehand winner into the corner finishes things off for Llodra. Goodall is back to one set all. Meanwhile, Marin Cilic, the 11th seed, has beaten Alberto Martin in straight sets. Routine stuff for a potential dark horse.
2043 : A superb return from Llodra moves him to set point at 6-5 in the breaker. He took that really early on the backhand and it flew past Goodall.
2042 : American fans will be happy to know Querrey has wrapped up a straight-sets win. He's another player with a big serve who can be dangerous on this surface.
2041 : A mini-break down at 4-3, Goodall comes up with a fine passing shot on the forehand and it's back to 4-4.
2037 : South holds to level at 1-1. That was a show of real character.
2035 : South again shows great determination to get out of trouble from 0-40 in the second game of the second set. Deuce. More good serving from Goodall - he's yet to lose his own delivery - gets him into the tie-break.
2034 : Any emails late in the day can be directed to andy.schooler@bskyb.com. Send us your thoughts on today's action.
2031 : Perhaps Goodall can cheer us Brits up. He's about to serve at 5-6 to stay in the second set.
2030 : Stoop undoes all the good work of the set as she loses the breaker 7-0. Zvonareva has been pushed hard, but she leads by one set to love.
2029 : A disappointing game from South comes just at the wrong time. Serving to stay alive at 5-6, she is broken to love and Johansson takes the first set 7-5. it's also bad news from Court 18 where Stoop is 5-0 down in the breaker.
2027 : I'm sure there must be a few Americans logged on at the moment given the time of day - or at least some ex-pats across the pond. In which case you may be interested to know that Sam Querrey is two sets up on Danai Udomchoke.
2025 : Johansson holds for 6-5, while Stoop takes the first set against Zvonareva into a tie-break!
2023 : Another seed has fallen - Patty Schnyder is out, going down 6-4 6-4 to Ai Sugiyama. Not the biggest shock that - Schnyder much prefers the slower clay.
2021 : A fine hold from South. It's 5-5. And surprisingly it's the same score out on Court 18 where British number five Georgie Stoop is doing extremely well against seventh seed Vera Zvonareva. Josh Goodall remains on serve in the second set against Llodra.
2019 : South saves another set point - this one with a second-serve ace! Gutsy stuff.
2017 : With Djokovic safely through, we can now focus on those three Britons in action. Mel South is currently down set point at 4-5 in her clash with Johansson but as I write she saves it with adeft backhand volley.
2014 : Izza Ahmad emails with a question: "I wanted to ask is Andy Murray better on grasscourt than on clay? If yes, that means he has high chances of winning the Wimbledon title although I hope Roger does." Well, Izza the answer is certainly yes. Andy's weakest surface is clay with hard probably his best. He's one of the better players on the grass and the bookies have him as second favourite. He's in action tomorrow.
2012 : A third match point for the 'Djoker'. This time Benneteau goes wide and after three and ahalf hours, the fourth seed finally wraps up victory. He had a big battle in this one though before winning 6-7 7-6 6-2 6-4 and will have to do better if he is to challenge for the title. Benneteau pleased the crowd on Centre and is receiving a fine reception after twice defying nasty knee injuries.
2011 : And he duly saves the match point, coming forward to put away a short ball on his forehand!
2010 : Benneteau is finally up and ready to play on - possibly for one more point.
2008 : Marin Cilic is now two sets to the good against Alberto Martin - 6-3 6-4. And Bartoli has indeed secured a 'double bagel' win. Chan could not win a game against the 2007 runner-up!
2006 : Back on Brit watch, Stoop is 4-1 down to Zvonareva, South is 4-3 down to Johansson, while Goodall is level at 1-1 in the second set with Llodra having won the first.
2005 : The trainer is back out and icing Benneteau's knee. Can he play on? Surely he can for one more point even if he feels he's properly injured.
2003 : Ouch! Benneteau slams into the back boards while chasing a lob, hitting the same knee he hurt earlier. It's another match point but he might not be able to play it - Benneteau does not look good. He's been in the wars big time today.
2002 : The crowd roar their approval as Djokovic dumps a return into the net. Deuce. The fans want more of this.
2001 : Benneteau gets back to 30-30 but then mis-hits a forehand - it's match point Djokovic.
2000 : Djokovic moves to 15-30 on the Benneteau serve - two points from victory now.
1958 : Out on Court 19 is 2007 finalist Marion Bartoli and she could be about to post the first 'double bagel' of the tournament. She has taken the first nine games off Yung-Jan Chan.
1956 : Djokovic holds for 5-4. Can he finish this off? Stoop's good start is fast disappearing. Zvonareva is showing her class now and has won three games in a row to lead 3-1.
1954 : Goodall serves out the first set against Llodra. He takes it 6-4. Could we get a British winner from these three players currently on court? Fingers crossed!
1953 : Benneteau holds for 4-4 and clenches both fists in celebration. At the other end Djokovic looks dejected. I suspect he's wondering how much longer he's going to be out here.
1952 : Benneteau just won't lie down on Centre. He's staving off break points at 3-4 at the moment and pumping his fist with each one he saves. The crowd are loving it. Over on Court One, South holds for 2-2, but Stoop surrenders her advantage against Zvonareva.
1948 : More good news - Georgie Stoop has just won the opening game of her clash with Vera Zvonareva, on the number seven seed's serve. A long way to go but that's an encouraging start from the British number five.
1947 : Out on Court Two, Josh Goodall is doing his best to lift British spirits. He leads Michael Llodra 5-3 in the first set.
1944 : Better from South. She hits back in game three to immediately retrieve the break of serve. 1-2. For those of you who don't follow tennis all year round, the women's game in Britain is certainly improving. South is the British number four and is world ranked 129. OK, it doesn't sound much, but it's a while since we've had four players in the top 130. The others are Anne Keothavong, Elena Baltacha and Katie O'Brien - those three are due to play tomorrow.
1941 : A poor start from South - perhaps that dress incident did disturb her. Johansson races into a 2-0 lead.
1938 : Karlovic serves out for a straight-sets win. With that massive serve he's always a danger on this surface, but he has a surprisingly poor record at Wimbledon. Aside from his stunning win over then-defending champion LleytonHewitt in 2003 and a run to the fourth round in 2004, SW19 has not been a happy hunting ground for the Croatian - he's lost in the first round for the last four years. Not this season though. 32 aces today and he did not drop serve.
1935 : Over on Centre, Djokovic is staying focused. He leads 3-2 in the fourth set but it's still on serve. He'll be keen to wrap this up in four. It looks like it could by a late night for some in SW19 tonight.
1934 : South and Johansson are under way. The Briton has already been given a fright - she got a ticking off from the umpire for having a sponsorship logo too large on her dress. She was duly sent off to change! Will that have upset her? We're about to find out.
1932 : Cilic has the first set against Martin - 6-3 the score - while Big Ivo is just a game away from victory over Lacko.
1929 : As South warms up with Johansson on Court One, Goodall and Llodra are under way. They've split the first two games. Aside from Andy Murray, who plays tomorrow, Goodall is probably Britain's best bet for a first-round win in the men's singles. The Brits didn't have the best of lcuk in the draw - you've just seen Ward up against the seventh seed Verdasco. Llodra is no mug, but he's only ranked 137th so Goodall (188) certainly has a chance.
1927 : Still Benneteau is refusing to go away against Djokovic. The Frenchman trails 2-1 in the fourth set but it's on serve.
1924 : Big Ivo Karlovic is now two sets to the good on Lukas Lacko - 28 aces and counting for the Croatian on Court 17!
1922 : Briton Mel South is going to play Mathilde Johansson on Court One now due to its early finish. Out on Court Two, Josh Goodall is set for an evening encounter with Michael Llodra.
1917 : Marin Cilic is another name worth following at Wimbledon this year - those of you who saw my tips will see I've backed him to reach the semis at a big price. The Croatian is currently on court against Alberto Martin and leads 4-2 in the early stages.
1913 : Djokovic claims the third set against Benneteau with another break of serve - he takes it 6-2 and leads now by two sets to one. That fall hasn't helped the Frenchman and he now has it all to do. You'd expect Djokovic to win in four now, but he's not been at his best today.
1912 : Some big serves from Verdasco take him to match point and he seals a 6-1 6-3 6-4 win with an ace. Briton Ward was, in truth, no match for the Spaniard but that's hardly a surprise. Verdasco is a class act and world number seven. He'll fancy his chances of going deep into the second week - just as he did at the Australian Open.
1910 : Ward is made to pay for missing those break points a few minutes ago. Verdasco breaks to lead 5-4 and he will serve for a straight-sets win.
1908 : Good news for Elena Dementieva fans. She's wrapped up a good 6-4 6-1 win over Alla Kudryavtseva. That was one of the toughest first-round draws, but the fourth seed comes through with flying colours. She is in a nice section of the draw and if she can continue that sort of form will be confident of reaching the semis, just as she did last year.
1906 : Dear, oh dear! Two double faults from deuce from Djokovic hands Benneteau a game. The Serb still leads 5-2 but he's far from sparkled today. And this set has been closer than the scoreline currently suggests.
1903 : Verdasco holds. Is that Ward's last chance gone? It's 4-4 now. Over on Centre, Djokovic is now serving for a two-sets-to-one lead at 5-1.
1902 : Ward snatches at a backhand on the first opportunity and then a forehand winner from Verdasco gets him to deuce.
1901 : Ward moves to 15-40 on the Verdasco serve and has two break points for a 5-3 lead in the third set!
1856 : Not surprisingly Benneteau looks a little awkward as he fallsbreak-point down. Showing no mercy, Djokovic moves him from left to right on the break point, forces the error and now leads 4-0.
1855 : Ward leads 3-2 on serve in the third set against Verdasco. While Dementieva is now 3-0 up in the second set of her clash.
1854 : Benneteau is up and ready to play on. Let's see if his movement is restricted.
1852 : Djokovic saves another break point to hold for 3-0 but the big news from that game was that Benneteau slipped badly and appeared to twist his knee on the final point. He immediately calls the trainer. We've seen a few tumbles today and the lush green grass, but that one is the worst so far. He's currently lying on the turf by his chair receiving treatment.
1847 : Tomorrow's order of play has just been published and, as predicted, Andy Murray will be last match on Centre Court - to catch the teatime TV viewers. He faces Robert Kendrick. Defending champion Venus Williams will open proceedings against Stefanie Voegele before Andy Roddick faces Jeremy Chardy. Over on Court One, there are matches featuring fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro, top seed Dinara Safina and former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, who recently made the last four at Queen's. British number one Anne Keothavong will be out on Court four (formerly Court Three for those of you who know the All England Club) for her clash with Patricia Mayr.
1845 : Benneteau saves break point with a lucky net cord. But Djokovic gets a second chance and take it to move 2-0 up. Perhaps he will push on now to claim victory in four sets. Plenty of work to do yet though.
1843 : By the way, Briton Josh Goodall is due on after Dementieva. He's facing Michael Llodra, the former Wimbledon doubles champion from France.
1842 : Out on Court Two, Dementieva has hit back against Kudryavtseva. From 1-3 she's won five out of six games to take the first set 6-4. A good fightback from the world number four.
1840 : Some of you may be expecting Djokovic to pull away from Benneteau after taking that second set to level up. No sign of that happening yet though - he's just had to save a break point in the opening game of the third.
1838 : Verdasco wraps up the second set 6-3 for a two-set lead. Ward has at least shown he can play a bit in that set, but it's a mountain to climb from here. Verdasco just looks too good for the Briton.
1834 : Djokovic pushes on take the tie-break 7-1. Aside from that one poor point, the Serb played that really well. The match is all square at one-set all.
1832 : Verdasco saves another break point and holds to lead Ward by a set and 5-2. At least Ward has given the home crowd something to cheer in that game.
1831 : Better stuff from Djokovic. He takes both of the next points on he Benneteau serve to lead 4-1 in the breaker. The Frenchman then nets and is in trouble at the change of ends, 5-1 down.
1829 : Djokovic nets and hands the initiative back! Over on Court One, Ward, after a superb lob, manages to get to break point for the first time but Verdasco slams the door in his face.
1827 : A crunching inside-out forehand gives Djokovic the early advantage with a mini-break.
1826 : An ace ses Djokovic into another tie-break with a hold to 15. He really needs to win this one.
1822 : Benneteau holds for 6-5 on Centre and Djokovic is in a real fight. He's struggling to make a serious impact on the Frenchman's serve and if he's not careful could soon be two sets down.
1817 : As suggested, Kudryavtseva is already causing Dementiva problems. An early break of serve has her 3-1 up in the first set.
1815 : Ward drops serve again at the start of the second set and the Verdasco procession continues. The crowd has tried its best to lift the Briton but he looks totally bereft of ideasabout how to change things around. It's aleady 3-0.
1812 : Out on Court 17, Ivo Karlovic is already banging down the aces. The 6ft 10in Croatian has taken the first set against Lukas Lacko 6-3 - serving 11 aces in the process. He actually served a record 55 in one match against Lleyton Hewitt at the French Open last month - and still lost!
1811 : A seeded casualty to report. Aleksandra Wozniak, the 23rd seed, has just lost a tight clash with Francesca Schiavone, the London-based Italian claiming victory by winning the final set 6-4.
1810 : Over on Court Two, fourth seed Elena Dementieva has just opened up against fellow Russian Alla Kudryavtseva. Given Kudryavtseva beat Maria Sharapova here 12 months ago, there's plenty of shock potential in that one.
1808 : Ward is being outclassed on Court One, I'm afraid to say. Verdasco has just taken the first set 6-1 with a third break of the Briton's serve. It's very one-sided and when you see a set like that you wonder whether it's a good idea to give so many wildcard to British players.
1758 : Djokovic is trying to get himself pumped up with some clenched fists at the end of that latest game. He holds to 15 for 2-2 but remember he's a set down to Benneteau.
1756 : If anyone has questions or comments on today's action, you can email us: andy.schooler@bskyb.com.
1754 : Djokovic and Benneteau aare continuing in familiar fashion - service continues to dominate. Consecutive love games mean it's 2-1 in Benneteau's favour in set two.
1751 : It's not looking good for Ward. A shot long give Verdasco a second break and it's already 3-0! Ward is the British number four, ranked a lowly 207 in the world.
1746 : They are under way on Court One now and it's not a good start for Briton James Ward. He's lost his serve in the very first game to Fernando Verdasco, the seventh seed. Verdasco reached the semis of the Australian Open earlier this season so this was always going to be a tough one for the wildcard. Let's see if he can improve.
1743 : Benneteau grabs the mini-break to lead 9-8 and then manages to hold the following service point, sending the ball back behind Djokovic to claim the breaker by 10 points to eight. Is there a shock on the cards here? There's been very little between the two so far by Benneteau has grabbed the couple of points that mattered in that breaker. Djokovic lost to Marat Safin in round two last year. Surely he can't go out in round one?
1742 : Benneteau pulls a shot into the tramlines and another set point goes begging 8-8. Outside, a good volley from Tsonga forces the error from Golubev and it's all over - the Frenchman, seeded nine, wins in four sets. From what I saw of that one, they played some high-quality stuff. Certainly the crowd reception they are getting shows the fans appreciated what they saw.
1740 : Three more match points to Tsonga - 6-3 in the breaker. Meanwhile, Djokovic can't return either of Benneteau's serves and things turn again - 8-7 to the Frenchman now!
1739 : Now it's set point to Djokovic at 7-6. He's already had one chance in Benneteau's last service game.
1738 : An ace saves it and they change ends again, locked at 6-6. Over on Court Two, Tsonga is 4-2 up in his tie-break.
1737 : Djokovic goes long with a backhand and he now has a set point to save, albeit on his own serve. 5-6 in the breaker.
1736 : Larcher De Brito is through to the second round - 6-2 7-5 she wins against Zakapalova.
1735 : A tame backhand into the net from Benneteau hands the mini-break advantage back.
1734 : Having already saved match point, Golubev has taken Tsonga into another tie-break. If he wins it they will be into a decider.
1733 : Benneteau reaches the change of ends with a 4-2 lead despite an untimely slip in theearly stages of the tie-break.
1728 : As predicted, Benneteau takes the opening set into a tie-break on Centre.
1727 : Djokovic dumps a return into the net and the it's back to deuce. Out on Court Two, Tsonga gets to match point on Golubev's serve at 4-5 in the fourth set but he wastes the opportunity. 5-5 now.
1726 : Djokovic gets back to deuce from 40-15 as Benneteau serves to stay in the first set. A backhand winner brings up set point.
1723 : Women's 10th seed Nadia Petrova wraps up a convincing win over Anastasiya Yakimova, 6-1 6-1 is the score.
1721 : Serbian star Janko Tipsarevic beat Andy Roddick here 12 months ago and his 2009 campaign is off to a good start - he's just beaten Jan Hernych in straight sets. Tipsarevic's compatriot Djokovic has just moved 6-5 up on Benneteau. This set has had tie-break written all over it for some time.
1718 : Soderling serves out to love and books his place in round two. He struggled for the best part of two sets against Muller but once he managed to break serve at the end of the second set, it was plain sailing.
1716 : Gilles Muller has folded terribly on Court One and Soderling is now serving for the match at 5-2 in the fourth set.
1715 : With people leaving their offices around now, this seems a good time to round up what's happened today and what's to come. Laura Robson lost in three sets to Daniela Hantuchova earlier today, the Briton having led by a set and a break. Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova all won in straight sets. Still to come are Britons James Ward, Josh Goodall, Georgie Stoop and Mel South. Fourth seed Elena Dementieva will also play later.
1707 : Soderling seems to be rolling on towards victory now. Muller's serve is broken again at the start of the fourth set and the Swede leads 2-1 in both sets and games.
1705 : It's 3-3 on Centre between Djokovic and Benneteau, with the Frenchman holding his own n the early stages. The aforementioned Larcher de Brito has taken the first set of her encounter 6-2.
1654 : Blimey. Soderling has just taken the third set 6-1 against Muller. He raced through that one to open a two-sets-to-one lead. A far cry from the split first two sets.
1650 : Tsonga serves out the two points he needs to move into a two-sets-to-one lead. A fine tie-break that from the Frenchman, seeded nine.
1648 : Tsonga grabs the first mini-break with a terrific cross-court dink. 5-3 he leads in the breaker.
1647 : Djokovic and Benneteau are under way on Centre - the Serb holds in the first game.
1645 : I've just received an email from a well-known bookmaker telling me Andy Murray is 1/100 to win tomorrow. I won't be getting rich backing him then. Tell me how you think he's going to do at this year's Wimbledon. Email: andy.schooler@bskyb.com
1644 : Crunch time in the Tsonga-Golubev match. A third-set tie-break is just under way.
1642 : The aforementioned 'grunter' Michelle Larcher de Brito is now out on court. Can you hear her? She's 3-2 up on Klara Zakopalova and it's on serve. Larcher de Brito is Portuguese by the way.
1640 : As happens so often in tennis, one break is soon followed by another. That's second successive break of Gilles Muller's serve for Soderling and the Swede leads 2-0 in the third set.
1637 : Tsonga and Golubev are at 5-5 in the third set of their clash now - this set will be crucial to the outcome you feel.
1633 : At last a break of serve on Court One and Soderling takes it - he wins the second set 7-5 as a result and the match is all square.
1630 : Serena suggests she hadn't wanted such a test in that second set. "For me it's always good to win easy," she says on her way back to the locker room when asking if being tested had been ideal.
1628 : Next up on Centrewill be fourth seed Novak Djokovic against France's Julien Benneteau. With all the focus on Murray, Federer and the injured Nadal, little has been said about Djokovic's chances. He made the semis here in 2007 but has been a bit inconsistent this season. If he can find his 'A' game though, he will challenge here.
1626 : Over on Court One, there's yet to be a break of serve. Soderling lost the first set on a tie-break to Muller and now it's 5-5 in the second.
1624 : Match point again for Serena at 15-40. Silva slices into the net and Williams has a 6-1 7-5 win. Easy in the first set but tougher in the second - that may well have got Serena match tight.
1621 : Serena holds easily for 6-5 and Silva must again hold serve to stay in the tournament.
1620 : Cibulkova, who we mentioned earlier, is through. She took the final set 6-3 against Coin to reach the last 64.
1619 : Silva holds with some impressive play and it's 5-5 in the second now. Great volley to finish that game off.
1617 : Serena moves to match point with Silva serving at 4-5, but the American dumps a backhand into the and the chance is missed.
1610 : A superbly-angled forehand moves Silva to game point again and this one is taken when Williams nets. 4-4 and the Portuguese is playing much better now.
1608 : Serena goes wide on the third break point. Silva then moves to game point but Serena comes to the net to blast away the ball, yelling out a huge 'grunt' in the process. Move over Maria!
1607 : Serving at 3-4, Silva saves two break points but hands Serena another with a double fault.
1603 : OK, we've got this far without really mentioning him, but it's time we spoke of Andy Murray. With the injured Nadal removed from his half of the draw, the British star really has a great chance to become the first Briton in 71 years to reach the men's singles final. At least that's my opinion. Let me know how you rate his chances by emailing: andy.schooler@bskyb.com. For those of you who don't know, Murray will open his campaign tomorrow - we'd guess he'll be last on Centre.
1600 : Beck completes his marathon five-set win over Lopez, a definite shock - the Spaniard is usually pretty good on the grass, 10-8 is the score in the deciding set. On Centre, Silva is making a better fist of things - 3-3 it is in the second set.
1557 : It's first set Muller on Court One - he's taken the tie-break 7-4 and Soderling is in early trouble.
1556 : Mardy Fish, who you may have seen reach the last eight at Queen's, is into round two after opponent Sergio Roitman quit when two games from defeat.
1554 : Beck breaks the Lopez serve and he will now serve for the match at 9-8.
1553 : We officially have our first epic of Wimbledon 2009. Feliciano Lopez and Karol Beck are slugging it out at 8-8 in the final set at present. That's a good effort from Beck, only playing after receiving a 'lucky loser' spot.
1552 : Out on Court 17, Cibulkova has dropped the second set 6-3 to Coin but she has a break of serve in the decider, which she leads 3-1.
1549 : Muller held set point against Soderling a moment ago but the Swede has managed to hold serve to move the first set into a tie-break. Soderling was the surprise package of the French Open, beating Nadal and going on to reach the final. His big serve and attack-minded game should serve him well here - he came mighty close to beating Nadal two years ago in SW19. Let's see how he does in the breaker.
1548 : Out on Court Two, Tsonga has just dropped the second set against Golubev by seven games to five. It seems the Frenchman is in for a fight today after all.
1539 : Serena takes the first set 6-1 after 27 minutes, ending it with a run of 11 straight points. Silva has been outclassed and was lucky to win a game there. Serena has been superior in all areas.
1536 : There's been another fall - this one on the outside courts and Severine Bremond Beltrame is unable to continue against eighth seed Victoria Azarenka. Azaranka had won the first set 6-2.
1533 : Silva is on the board at last. 4-1 Serena leads with a double break.
1529 : It's 3-0 Serena now and the early signs aren't great for Silva who could be out of here quick! On Court One, Soderling and Muller are at 3-3 in the first set.
1527 : It seems the general view is that Robson should be proud of taking a set off Daniela Hantuchova earlier today - she lost in three sets for those of you just joining us. Andrew Johnston adds: "I have to say I was very impressed with her performance today. She did fantastically well against a more experienced opponent. I can't understand Nick Crooks e-mail, how can you say that about a 15-year-old? Fair enough if she was about 25 and had been around 6 or 7 years, but she was a wild card entry and performed admirably. Furthermore if she as you so eloquently put in "does not have the balls" how was she able to win the junior Wimbledon title as well as impressive performances in the other junior slams, and whilst you may say they're only junior slams, don't forget, that is where the players of tomorrow will be plying their trade at a young age!"
1524 : More feedback and Sean Woodall adds: "Mark Higginson is right! Laura did excellent for her first bash at Wimbledon aged just 15! As for no balls, what did Andy Murray do last Sunday again...?"
1522 : Serena's first point on serve is a double fault but she hits back to hold to 30. 2-0 she leads.
1517 : Serena breaks in the opening game of the match. One interesting point to note is that the second seed has both ankles heavily taped for this match. She's had ankle problems in the past but I'd imagine that is largely due to the slippy early-tournament conditions - we've already seen some tumbles today.
1515 : More feedback on Laura Robson and Mark Higginson has leapt to her defence. "I'm sorry but why are we criticising Laura Robson's performance? She was a wild card entry and took the first set off the world number 30 - at 15 years old! She's gained some experience and we have something to look forward to for future tournaments - please leave it at that." Email us your views on all things tennis to: andy.schooler@bskyb.com
1513 : Urszula Radwanska, a former junior champion here, has won her opening match. She's not seeded - unlike sister Agnieszka - and could be a dangerous floater in the draw.
1512 : Silva gets things under way on Centre - apparently she's the first Portuguese ever to play on the hallowed turf.
1508 : OK, so I may be getting carried away with the fashion thing, but Serena is warming up in a what looks to be a rain coat - like a short Mackintosh. I think she hasd that last year to be fair. She's up against Silva, a player I have to admit I'd never heard of until Friday's draw. She came through qualifying so must be able to play on grass. She's up against it in this one though, taking on the bookies' favourite.
1504 : Dominika Cibulkova made a name for herself by reaching the semi-finals of the French Open earlier this month. Today's she taken the first set against Julie Coin. Keep and eye on Cibulkova, she has the potential to cause a shock or two.
1502 : Nick Crooks emails about Laura Robson's defeat. He says: "This result just goes to show that British players have never had and never will have the balls to rise to the big occasion. As long as we have people like the Lloyds in charge of our tennis (who are they, what did they ever achieve?), we will never be a force to be reckoned with in world tennis." 1500 :Fashion update - Federer has just described his jacket as "military style". He also says he's "very happy" with his performance today. The title favourite is on his way.
1459 : Next on the show courts will be Serena Williams (she's up against Neuza Silva on Centre) and French Open finalist Robin Soderling (taking on Gilles Muller on Court One).
1457 : Our friend Mr Tsonga has taken the first set against Golubev 6-3. Allez la France!
1455 : Federer is taking the plaudits now on Centre. He's just served out to love to wrap up a 7-5 6-3 6-2 win over Lu. Not the Swiss at his best, but a pretty routine victory to start his latest title challenge. Flashes of brilliance but he didn't really have to get out of second gear.
1453 : Sharapova walks off in a business-style jacket. Not to sure of my fashion terms I'm afraid! One of my colleagues suggests Federer can get away with that sort of thing as he's a five-time winner. Sharapova with one title - perhaps not?!
1452 : Kutuzova nets and Sharapova moves into round two, It wasn't easy for the former champion and she will need to improve if she is to prove a genuine title conender. Over on Centre, Federer breaks Lu again and is about to serve for the match at 5-2.
1451 : Kutuzova gets back to 30-30. Then a Hawkeye challenge goes in Sharapova's favour to move her to match point.
1450 : Sharapova will probably need to finish tis match off on the return of serve and she's just moved to 0-30. Two more points...
1448 : You may remember China's Zheng Jie reached the semis here last year when ranked outside the top 100. She's seeded 16 this time around and has just won her opening match of the tournament, beating German Kristina Barrois in two tie-break sets.
1447 : Sharapova can rarely have suffered this much on serve - that first delivery is really lacking the bite of the past. She's soon down 0-40 again. A netted drop shot sees the game lost to love and Kutuzova stays alive.
1445 : Sharapova breaks again and will now serve for a place in round two at 5-3.
1443 : Sharapova does drive you mad, doesn't she? It's been described as grunting but it's more like a loud shout when she hits the ball. Kutuzova isn't much different to be fair but it's certainly annoying. But you ain't seen nothing yet - Portuguese teenager Michelle Larcher de Brito is even louder. She's due on Court 17 later. You may be able to hear her down on Court Two. She was warned by the umpire about the noise at the recent French Open. There could be more fireworks later! If you have a view on this or anything else, you can email me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com. We'll publish some comments right here.
1441 : Now Federer hits the turf over on Centre! The courts do look good on day one though. This is one of the reasons why some players look so uncomfortable on the surface.
1440 : Sharapova takes a nasty fall on Court One and gets up feeling her knee. It's often a problem in the early days of the tournament with the grass still so green and lush. She looks OK and will continue straight away.
1439 : Lu misses the simplest of volleys when break point down and allows Federer to move 2-1 ahead in the third set. It also looks likely to be the final set now. Federer should win in straights from here.
1437 : Great stuff from Kutuzova shows she's far from finished yet. She's been able to hang in the rallies today - and she's just shown two good examples to get to 0-40 on the Sharapova serve. A smash at the net brings a break to love. 3-4 now and back on serve!
1434 : A crunching forehand winner down the line off the return of serve sees Sharapova break for a 4-2 lead in the second set. She's had to fight hard today but looks set to win in straight-sets now against Kutuzova.
1427 : Any thoughts onwhat you've seen so far? How about that Laura Robson match - good for her future or a flop of British proportions? Email your views to: andy.schooler@bskyb.com
1425 : Federer takes the second set 6-3 against Lu. The man from Taipei was made to pay for that sloppy start to the second set - too many unforced errors and the damage was done. A two-set lead for the five-time winner.
1423 : Sharapova's a real fighter all right. She breaks back to 1-1 and then staves offmore break points on serve to move 2-1 ahead in the second set against Kutuzova. Outside, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has just started his match against Andrey Golubev. The ninth seed is one of my players to watch out for. With his big serve and massive forehand, I think he's a danger to the big guns like Federer and Murray. He's drawn in Federer's half and could meet him in the last eight.
1419 : Federer holds for 5-2. Out on Court Three - that's the old Court Two! - James Blake is out in what is the first big shock of the tournament. he Queen's Club runner-up has been beaten in straight sets by claycourter Andreas Seppi. 7-5 6-4 7-6 is the scoreline.
1418 : A superb point sees Federer raise his fist to salute a backhand winner around the net post! Lu's volley has been excellent out wid but not good enough.
1417 : Lu forces two break-back points on the Federer serve. The Swiss comes to net to put away a smash on the first. On the second, Lu frames a backhand so it's back to deuce.
1413 : Sharapova loses her serve again at the start of the second set. It's widely regarded her serve - such a potent weapon when she won here in 2004 - is not as strong as it once was. The shoulder problems she's had have weakened it somewhat and she's already lost it three times today.
1408 : Sharapova wins the first set 7-5 against Kutuzova. Has she put that early trouble behind her? It's looking that way.
1407 : Federer has taken control of the second set against Lu. He broke to love in the second game and has just held to love to make it 3-0. Federer took the first set 7-5 remember.
1406 : That match had a familiar ring about it from a British point of view. Robson led by a set and a break but she couldn't play the big points well enough to push on to win. The fact she double faulted on set point and match point, proves that. Still, Robson will take plenty from this match - she's only 15 remember and was up against a player ranked 32 in the world.
1404 : An all-too-predictable way to end - double fault from Robson. Hantuchova wins 3-6 6-4 6-2
1403 : A forehand drifts into the tramlines and it's match point number two for the Slovak.
1402 : Robson saves the match point with an ace down the T.
1401 : At 30-30 on Robson's serve. She goes long with a forehand and it's match point to Hantuchova.
1359 : Hantuchova holds for 5-2 and Robson must now hold serve to stay in the tournament.
1358 : Despite producing two aces in the game, Lu loses a must-win game as Federer takes the first set. A poor volley brought up set point and Federer then punished a weak second serve. He takes the set 7-5.
1356 : There are few better fighters in the women's game than Sharapova and she's got the first set against Kutuzova back on serve having been two breaks down. It's now 5-5 on Court One.
1353 : Crunch time for Robson. She falls down 30-40 on serve. And another double fault on break point hands Hantuchova a 4-2 lead. The nerves have kicked in on the big points for Robson, it has to be said. She's got it all to do now.
1352 : Sharapova holds serve on Court One but Kutuzova will now serve for the first set at 5-4.
1351 : Lu is sticking in there. He didn't start well and could easily have lost the first four games, but he's proving a dogged opponent for Federer, whohas yet to find his top form. 5-5 now on Centre.
1346 : Robson gets to 30-30 on the Hantuchova serve but from there the Slovak wins back-to-back points - the second with a huge ace - to move ahead 3-2 in the final set.
1345 : Robson moves things on 2-2 in the final set. No signs of a break so far. Over on Centre, Federer is not having things all his own way at all. 4-4 now there.
1338 : Robson produces a solid hold - just what was required. 1-1 in the final set. Federer moves 4-3 ahead on Centre, but it's been a good start from Lu, the Chinese Taipei player.
1335 : Sharapova gets one of the breaks back - she's now 2-4 down - while Hantuchova holds in the opening game of the decider against Robson. Big game for her now - she was fuming after that last service game of hers.
1334 : A net cord ball drops dead on Lu's side of the net to give Federer a chance to break back. Lu then nets with a forehand so it's back on serve at 3-3 first set.
1333 : Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the 31st seed, is the first winner of Wimbledon 2009. She's just wrapped up a 6-2 6-2 win over Petra Cetkovska.
1331 : A double fault for Robson - her 10th - hands Hantuchova set point. And another follows straight away. An awful way to lose the set. We're into a decider and it could well be we are talking about another 'brave' British defeat in 30 minutes or so.
1330 : And Blake has lost the second set 6-4 to Seppi. The Queen's finalist is now two sets down.
1329 : Stories are gathering around the All England Club - Sharapova is now a double break down at 4-1 on Court One, while Lu has break point against Federer. He takes it and goes 3-2 up in the first set!
1327 : There will now be a big test for Robson on Court Two - Hantuchova holds to 15 to move 5-4 ahead. The Briton must now hold serve to stay in the second set.
1326 : Lu staves off four break points against Federer to level at 2-2 on Centre.
1324 : Big trouble for James Blake on Court Three - the champions' graveyard. He's down a set and a break now to Andreas Seppi, an Italian claycourt specialist. Few would have seen that coming.
1323 : Robson levels at 4-4 as Hantuchova goes long with an attempted lob.
1320 : Over on Court One, Sharapova is in early bother, losing her serve to fall 2-1 down to Kutuzova. Maria has only just returned to the tour afte shoulder surgery kept her out for nine months. Work to do for the Russian.
1319 : A big hold for Hantuchova. She moves ahead 4-3 in the second set.
1318 : Break point to Robson but she fails to get her return back in play. Deuce again. Key moments you feel here.
1317 : A poor drop shot from Hantuchova makes it deuce. On Centre, Federer leads 2-1 but no breaks yet.
1314 : A second break point and this time Hantuchova strikes back. Or rather Robson falters - a double fault brings the second-set score back to 3-3. First set Robson. Was that the first sign f nerves from the young Briton.
1312 : Robson falls break point down and gets lucky with a line call which Hawkeye shows was wrong. Hantuchova didn't challenge though.
1307 : Hantuchova goes wide and Robson breaks for a 3-2 lead. Leading by a set and a break, the Briton could be about to create a big story on day one here.
1306 : For those of you who don't know much abou Lu, he's world ranked 65 and has only reached the second round here twice. He'll do well to reach it again this year! Over on Court One, Maria Sharapova is about to open proceeedings against Viktoria Kutuzova.
1304 : Robson holds for 2-2 on Court Two. She's looking very good so far.
1302 : Fashion fans - Federer is warming up in those white trousers of his. Like something out of the 1930s. Good move or fashion faux pas?
1300 : Over on Centre Court, five-time winner RogerFederer steps out for his match with Chinese Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu. He's the favourite for the title again this year. No roof across yet today but the new structure is looking impressive and ready if required. Remember we will still have delays when it rains - it takes about 10 minutes to close the roof and then around 20 minutes for the air conditioning to sort conditions out - but we shouldn't be sitting around with nothing to do much any more. Check out the features section of our Wimbledon microsite for my article on the new roof. I've been speaking to All England Club vice president John Barrett about it.
1256 : Seppi takes the first set 7-5 against Blake. Meanwhile, both Hantuchova and Robson hold their serves at the start of the second set. 1-1.
1252 : Plenty of other action is taking place around the All England Club. Amiong the big names playing now is Queen's Club runner-up James Blake but Andreas Seppi is about to serve for the first set of their clash at 6-5.
1250 : Hantuchova goes long and 15-year-old Laura Robson leads the former world number five by a set to love. 6-3 she takes it. A real story is brewing here.
1249 : Robson's serve was a good weapon when she won the junior event last year and it looks beefed up even more a year on. An ace takes her to 40-0!
1248 : Joe Meehan has emailed to predict title glory for Miss Robson! Well, it's a good start here Joe but hold your horses! A more realistic comment on the men's singles is: "I think Andy Murray will win as he is looking in form and you can't trust the form of Roger Federer. Also I think that Andy Roddick may have a chance of getting far this year."
1246 : An ace from the Slovak finishes the game off and now Robson will serve for the set at 5-3.
1244 : A set point to Robson but Hantuchova stands firm. Back to deuce.
1238 : Hantuchova goes long on break point before two fine forehands from Robson see her into that 5-2 lead! he shouts of 'come on Laura' have been ringing out. How common a feature are they going to become here over the coming years? Quite a big one if this start is anything to go by.
1237 : Two chances to finish things off and secure a 5-2 lead go begging for Robson.
1235 : The first is saved with a big forehand from left-hander Robson. Hantuchova then nets and it's back to deuce.
1234 : Break points again as Hantuchova out-rallies Robson from the baseline twice to make it 15-40.
1231 : A double fault from Hantuchova sees her fall 15-40 down. And a crunching return from Robson sees her break again! 4-2 it is.
1229 : Remember you can email your tennis-related thoughts and questions to me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com. Any suggestions for a title dark horse perhaps this year?
1227 : Oh dear. A double fault from Robson at 15-40 hands the break of serve back to Hantuchova. 2-3 and the Slovak to serve.
1224 : Hantuchova is on the board. That's an easy hold for the Slovak to love. 3-1 now to the Briton.
1221 : It's 3-0 Robson now. She's taken to deuce in the third game but slams down another ace to clinch it.
1216 : Hantuchova goes long on break point at 30-40 and Robson leads 2-0. Great start with few nerves on show from the 15-year-old.
1213 : Robson holds to 30 and is up and running against Hantuchova. A loud round of applause rings out around the new Court Two.
1210 : Robson steps up to serve and she start with an ace! Great start from the Briton.
1208 : Still warming up around the grounds. We will get some real action any minute now.
1205 : Any questions or comments can be sent to andy.schooler@bskyb.com. It you want to know my tips for this year, they are available at our sister site: www.bettingzone.co.uk
1200 : Robson walks out onto the new Court Two. Not surprisingly there's a bigcrowd i n he new 4,000-capacity court. It's down at the bottom end of the All England Club for those who know it. The old Court Two - the so-called champions' graveyard - still exists and has been rebranded as Court Three for this year. It will be demolished in a few weeks though as the club is building a new Court Three in its place. The changes continue!
1150 : If you were wondering, Andy Murray starts his campaign against American Robert Kendrick tomorrow. Back to today and in the absence of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer opens the action on Centre Court at 1300 BST. He plays Yen-Hsun Lu. Serena Williams follows against Neuza Silva and then it's Novak Djokovic v Julien Benneteau. On Court One, Ward's match follows Maria Sharapova v Viktoria Kutuzova and French Open runner-up Robin Soderling against Gilles Muller.
1145 : James Ward is among the other Britons in action today - he plays seventh seed Fernando Verdasco on Court One later. Josh Goodall plays Michael Llodra, Geogie Stoop meets seventh seed Vera Zvonareva. Perhaps the most likely winner from a home perspective today is Mel South who faces France's Mathilde Johansson.
1135 : So what's coming up? Well, the early British focus will be on Laura Robson, the 15-year-old who last year won the junior title here. She's playing the senior draw on a wildcard this year and is up against former world number five Daniela Hantuchova in her first match. The Slovak is currently ranked 32 in the world. It's a tough ask for Robson but in her only previous match on the WTA Tour she forced the then-world number 42 - Iveta Benesova - to a final set.
1130 : Welcome to our coverage of Wimbledon 2009. The weather is set fair in SW19 so we look set for a full day's play - and no need for that splendid new Centre Court roof! We'll bring you what to expect today shortly, but in the meantime if you have any questions feel free to email me: andy.schooler@bskyb.com
