wimbledon diary - july 6

Supporters of Marcos Baghdatis brought plenty of life and colour to Court 13.

Following the Cypriot's straight sets defeat of Nikolay Davydenko, his adoring followers - many wearing Greece football shirts - bayed for souvenirs and autographs from their hero and posed with him for pictures.

And after Baghdatis had left the court, they were still saluting him in song.

A quiz question.

Which of these players did Venus Williams want to emulate as a child?

Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert - or maybe Steffi Graf?

Actually it's none of the above, but rather a freckly red-headed German by the name of Boris Becker.

Asked about her first experience of a grass court, Williams revealed: "Probably in Greenleaf in the 90s, central Florida.

"I probably was thinking like, 'Oh, I want to dive, like Becker. But my first ever dive was yesterday (during her win over Maria Sharapova)."

Williams also revealed she has no problem with the numerous rain delays which have blighted this year's Wimbledon.

The persistent precipitation has caused scheduling misery for the likes of Rafael Nadal, but Williams has a completely different perspective on the issue.

"The rain has a special significance for me because I grew up in Southern California where it never rains," Williams said.

"When it did rain, it means we had a day off from practice. I've always found the rain very calming."

Cherie Blair was among the visitors to SW19 yesterday - you'd have thought she had had enough of spin.
