Federer - started like a train on Sunday
ROGER TOO HOT FOR RAFA

Roger Federer got off to a flyer in his men's singles final clash with Rafael Nadal on Centre Court.

The Swiss star lost the first point of the match but was quickly into his stride against the precocious teenager.

Federer was all business in the opening set, hardly putting a foot wrong as he wrapped it up 6-0 with some stunning play.

He was solid on either wing and the depth of his shots was superb throughout.

Nadal upped his game in the second set and secured his first break of serve to lead 2-0.

Federer hit back and fired down two clean aces as he reduced his arrears, and when Nadal sent a backhand long in the next game to bring about break point Federer looked right back in the set.

Another outrageous backhand winner looked like making it 2-2, but Nadal dug deep and toughed it out for a 3-1 lead.

More power play from Federer, and another ace, made it 3-2 but Nadal won the next game to stay a break in front with some very solid play from the back of the court.

He held to love to go 5-3 up, but after Federer held to make it 5-4 Nadal threw in a service game littered with errors.

A misjudged forehand made it 5-5, and Federer raced away with game 11 to move ahead in the set.

However Nadal stayed in the set by holding serve to make it 6-6 and force a tie-break, and a stunning forehand put him a mini-break up in that.

However he was pegged back by Federer, and when Nadal looped a forehand high and wide Federer sensed blood.

From 1-3 behind Federer won five consecutive points to force set point, but a deft volley at the net by Rafa kept him in it.

However when the Spaniard dumped a forehand into the net Federer took the set and control of the match.

To his eternal credit Nadal kept plugging away and won the first game of the third set fairly handily.

Federer levelled up and after a 22-stroke rally in game three put the pressure back on Nadal.

The world number two held his nerve despite throwing in a double fault to go 2-1 ahead, sealing the game with a wicked forehand winner.

However two big returns had the Fed Express 0-30 up on the Nadal serve, but the Spaniard toughed out that particular mini-crisis to hold.

Federer survived a break point opportunity at 2-3 down after double faulting, but a couple of booming serves soon got him out of trouble.

The pair traded heavy groundstrokes as the set continued to go with serve, with Nadal winning an impressive service game to love to go 6-5 up.

Federer then held as the third set went into a tie-break, and some inspired hitting from Nadal saw him open up an early 2-0 lead.

Federer pegged it back to 2-2, but a couple of uncharacteristic unforced errors saw Nadal go 4-2 ahead.

The Spaniard then held his advantage to take the match into a fourth set.

It was the first set Federer had lost in SW19 this year.

However Federer upped his level again in the fourth, breaking crucially early on as Nadal began to wilt.

He consolidated his break to lead 4-1, and a fourth title on the spin was suddenly within touching distance.

The Swiss broke again but failed to serve it out at 5-1.

However, he had a second chance and this time claimed victory, converting his first Championship point to run out a conclusive 6-0 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 winner.
