The veteran Japanese has been one of the great all-rounders of the game in recent years. Having made the quarter-finals here in singles in 2004 she reached the world's top 10, while she has long been one of the leading doubles combatants, winning the title here with Kim Clijsters in 2003. This season hasn't been a great one for Sugiyama, but she usually performs well on the grass where her volleying skills come to the fore. Could make week two in singles, should make week two in doubles.
