Three-times Wimbledon champion Boris Becker believes "the future has come"
with Roger Federer's men's singles final victory.
After the 21-year-old Swiss star's 7-6 6-2 7-6 victory over Mark
Philippoussis, Becker said: "Behind the poker face and cold exterior is an
emotional young man as we saw with the scenes that followed his win.
"He has not played great in grand slams before but he was very convincing in
the final. He is a deserved champion."
Becker added on BBC1: "I am convinced he will win many more Wimbledons and
US Opens and other grand slams. The future has come today."
And Becker paid tribute to Federer's all-round game. "We are finally seeing a
player with an old technique. He can serve and volley, can stay back, can slice
and play the drop shot. He is a good example.
"You don't need a 135mph serve or heavy top spin to become a top player."
The German also paid tribute to Philippoussis.
"Mark is a great personality. He has gone through so many highs and lows in
his career already. He's a nice guy off the court as well.
"He will have success if he continues with his attitude and pattern of
play."
Britain's John Lloyd said: "Federer showed a brand of tennis not seen here
for many years.
"He gave us examples in the (Andy) Roddick game that he is playing in a
different league. His imagination is amazing, but you have to execute it on
court and he can do that.
"He can do everything. We have a champion who could win this for many
years."
Philippoussis' fellow Australian and former coach Pat Cash believes Federer
benefited from his compatriot's big-match nerves.
Cash told BBC1: "Federer played well but his (Philippoussis') serve wasn't as
effective.
"He looked like all the pressure was on him - he didn't settle the whole
match.
"He didn't do much wrong - he just wasn't quite as sharp. If he hits these
big serves he wins, if he doesn't he loses.
"He's been serving incredibly well but Federer was the one that settled."
However, Cash believes Federer is a worthy Wimbledon champion and looked
forward to seeing the Swiss in action again.
"You have to produce to be a champion," he said.
"You see some guys can hit the ball all day, Federer has got that 'wow'
factor - you just sit back and think, 'Look at that shot'.
"I thought Philippoussis would have tried to get aggressive but the whole day
he looked heavy. I was the same, unless I got my feet moving I wasn't a threat.
"That's what happens when you're nervous, he never really kicked into top
gear. When he had a little bit of a chance he missed it.
"Philippoussis was out-served and that's not something we see often.
Federer has got a good back-up as well.
"He's going to be around winning grand slams he's got that flair, if not this
year then in the next few years."
After lifting the mixed doubles title, Martina Navratilova tipped Federer to win many more Grand Slam titles.
She said: "The guy has so much talent you just wonder why he hasn't won it
before. Maybe it is because he was also so passive. That is what I used to think
when I saw him play before<./P>
"Hopefully, he may have taken the monkey off his back now. He can relax and I
can see him winning titles on grass again. With the talent he has he can win on
any surface."
