Defending champion Serena Williams' had to fight back from a set down to beat Jennifer Capriati in a thrilling Wimbledon quarter-final.

Williams dropped the first set 6-2 as Capriati started brilliantly.

But from 2-2 in the second set, the world number one rattled off seven games in a row to turn the match on its head.

Capriati had chances to break back as Serena served for the match at 5-3 but twice failed to do so and Williams eventually clinched her place in the last four.

She will now face Justine Henin-Hardenne in a rematch of their French Open semi.

Williams said: "It was definitely tough, I knew she plays very well and I hadn't beaten her yet on grass.

"I had to come back, I wanted to go to three sets at least."

Henin-Hardenne, who won the pair's encounter in Paris, enjoyed a more routine win, beating Russian teenager Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2 6-2 in less than an hour.

In the other half of the draw, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters both survived three-set battles to set up a mouthwatering semi-final clash.

Williams took the first set 6-2 against Lindsay Davenport but the 1999 champion stormed back into the match by winning the second by the same scoreline.

However, Venus upped her game once more in the decider and ran away with it in the end, winning five straight games to take it 6-1.

Afterwards the two-time champion made it clear she is set on another strong bid for the crown.

She said: "If you get this far then you have to be doing something right and I'm pretty happy with my game.

"I'm just 23 and I've won a couple of Grand Slams - but I want some more and this is probably the place to do it."

She added: "I had to stay on my toes throughout because Lindsay played so well - but that's no surprise.

"This was I think our 22nd meeting and most of them have gone to three sets. It was quite tough for both of us holding under pressure."

Clijsters survived a bigger scare to reach the last four.

The second seed dropped the first set to Silvia Farina Elia 7-5 after blowing three set points.

However, that seemed to kickstart the Belgian who lost just one more game as she stormed back to record a 5-7 6-0 6-1 victory.

Clijsters later revealed that a bee sting had contributed to the lost of that opening set.

"I just got a bit confused," said Clijsters, who was stung on the stomach. "I didn't know if I should call the trainer or what to do.

"I was very happy I didn't blow up out there and to know that I didn't have any allergies to that.

"It's never happened to me before but it did hurt. It was pretty painful until the second or third game of the second set."

Farina Elia conceded: "I played my best tennis today in the first set but at the beginning of the second set I lost my nerve a little bit.

"She went up a level and I couldn't handle it."

In the men's singles, Sebastien Grosjean set up a meeting with Britain's Tim Henman by seeing off Juan Carlos Ferrero.

The Queen's Club runner-up was two sets to one up overnight in a match which was suspended due to fading light.

When the players returned on Tuesday afternoon, Grosjean broke to lead 6-5 in the fourth set and then blew a match point before Ferrero broke back to force a tie-break.

However, the Frenchman was in no mood for a final set and took the breaker 7-3 to wrap up a 6-2 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) victory and set up that quarter-final with the Briton.
