Verdict: Surprised the tennis world at the French Open his year when she reached the semi-finals on her Roland Garros debut.

The shocks began with a victory over fourth seed Kim Clijsters and then Elena Dementieva joined the Fernandez casualty list.

Finally lost out to Venus Williams but the ranking points picked up saw her fly into the world's top 40.

It had all been so different at the start of the year when Fernandez was being forced to qualify for tour events, beginning 2002 with a ranking of 124.

This will be her second appearance at Wimbledon and she will doubtless attract more attention than last year.

But a clay-based game is unlikely to serve her well.
