Date of Birth: 29.03.76
Became pro: 1990
World ranking: 3 |
Verdict: The past 18 months have been remarkable for the former teenage prodigy who went on be a drug user and shoplifter.
In January she successfully defended her Australian Open title and narrowly failed to keep hold of the French Open crown, losing to eventual winner Serena Williams in a titanic semi-final.
Remarkably consistent in the Slams, this renowned fighter has the beating of virtually any opponent on her day.
Has yet to go beyond the last four here - she did so last year and in 1991 as a 15-year-old - but still has to be regarded as a big threat.
The most likely winner away from the Williams sisters.
