Nalbandian must stay positive.
LLEYTON HEWITT v DAVID NALBANDIAN
SERVE
Hewitt is not one of the biggest servers in the men's game but he still served
20 aces in his quarter-final win over Sjeng Schalken and can crank it up over
120mph when necessary.
Nalbandian serves at a similar speed to Hewitt but not as reliable or accurate
and managed just one ace in five sets in his semi-final win over Xavier
Malisse.
FOREHAND
Hewitt made a few uncharacteristic unforced errors against Tim Henman, but
usually a punishing weapon that grinds out shot after after shot with metronomic
accuracy.
The best shot in Nalbandian's armoury, the forehand generates great power
allied with a surprising accuracy that he will need to use to keep Hewitt on the
back foot.
BACKHAND
Hewitt employs a two-handed backhand that is usually as reliable as his
forehand, but he can struggle with shots into the body and when rushed at the
baseline.
Nalbandian's backhand is not as good as the forehand but reliable enough to
last out the long rallies that will be a feature of the contest. Would be well
advised to use the sliced backhand to keep the ball low and reduce Hewitt's
options.
VOLLEY
Hewitt's volleying is hard to assess as he approaches the net only as a last
resort. Demonstrated some nice touches against Schalken but obviously prefers to
stay on the baseline.
The same generally applies to Nalbandian although his victory in the junior
doubles at Wimbledon in 1999 proves the net is not a totally alien environment.
More willing to come in behind a deep approach than Hewitt and has thrown
himself around occasionally in a style reminiscent of Boris Becker.
TEMPERAMENT
Spain's Alex Corretja said Hewitt was "mentally number one in the world" a
year before the Australian officially become number one last November. His
never-say-die attitude is his greatest strength and Nalbandian will get very few
cheap points.
Nalbandian seemed to let the controversy over Malisse's injury time-out during
their semi-final get to him as he was pegged back from two sets up to two all,
but regained his focus after the overnight break and will need to stay positive
throughout the match if Hewitt makes another fast start.
