Became pro: 2000
World ranking: 14 |
Verdict: Much is expected of teenager Roddick who has been touted as Pete Sampras' successor at the head of the sport.
The pressure was well and truly on him at the US Open in August when he reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final and went close to beaten eventual champ Lleyton Hewitt but was beaten in five sets, blowing his top John McEnroe-style in the process.
His massive serve will be a big factor here as he showed when serving countless aces, losing to eventual winner Goran Ivanisevic in last year's third round.
Still, his volleying skills are yet to be perfectly honed, and question marks always surround his fitness, especially at these two-week events.
Has the talent, but perhaps his time is still to come.
