(26) TODD MARTIN (USA)

Date of Birth: 08.07.70
Became pro: 1990
World ranking: 39 |
Verdict: A proven grasscourt performer, sadly Martin seems destined to be remembered for the wrong reasons at Wimbledon.
Twice he has reached the semi-finals, but in 1996 he somehow managed to lose to MaliVai Washington from 5-1 up in the final set. Martin twice served for the match and failed, eventually losing 10-8.
The American veteran has an impressive Grand Slam record without ever lifting one of the trophies. He made the final at the Australian Open in 1994 and the US Open final in 1999.
He was close to adding another chapter to that story last year at Wimbledon but having led Tim Henman by two sets to one, Henman's superior fitness told.
Injuries have made Martin a less-feared opponent in recent times, but the top seeds will be glad to see him seeded as none of them would have wanted to play him in the first round.
