HENMAN ROARS PAST DRAPER

Tim Henman recovered from a stuttering start to book his place in the third round of the men's singles with victory over Scott Draper.

Henman led 3-1 in the first set but lost the next five games in a row and looked in danger of seeing his title dreams blown away.

But the British number one rallied well to take the next three sets against the Australian qualifier and bring the Centre Court crowd to their feet with a brilliant backhand winner to seal a 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-3 victory.

Two more high-profile seeds crashed out when Kim Clijsters and Juan Carlos Ferrero were both beaten in round two.

Clijsters, seeded five in the women's singles, went down in straight sets to Russia's Elena Likhovtseva.

The Russian girl took a tight first set on a tie-break, but raced through the second 6-2 to reach round three.

Ferrero, seeded nine in the men's singles, went out in straight sets to American lucky loser Jeff Morrison.

The Spaniard, much more at home on clay, went down 6-3 7-5 7-6 on Centre Court.

Just three of the top 10 seeds remain in the men's singles after Guillermo Canas joined Ferrero on the growing list of casualties.

The 10th-seeded Argentinian slumped to defeat at the hands of Spain's Feliciano Lopez in five sets, having led 2-0.

Canas looked in control after winning the first two sets 6-4 6-2 but lost the next two 6-7 (7-9) 5-7 and went out after surrendering the fifth 10-8.

Back in the women's singles British wild card Elena Baltacha roared back from a set down to post a famous victory over South African 32nd seed Amanda Coetzer.

Baltacha lost the opener 7-5, but fought back to take the second 6-4.

And the British girl strolled through the decider 6-2 to reach round three.

Men's top seed Lleyton Hewitt brought a semblance of normality to events by cruising through against France's Gregory Carraz.

However, the 21-year-old number one seed did not have things all his own way, suffering a scare in the fifth game when he was forced to save three break points.

In contrast, Carraz was completely untroubled on his own serve until the crucial 10th game, when he battled back from two set points down - only for Hewitt to take it 6-4 at the third attempt.

The second set was also close, but Hewitt won a tie-break 7-5 to take firm control of the match.

Carraz finally cracked in the third set as Hewitt overpowered him to take it 6-2 to progress to round three.

Last year's quarter-finalist and 16th seed Nicolas Escude overcame the challenge of Marc Rosset in four sets to move into the third round.

Women's top seed and defending champion Venus Williams followed Hewitt into round three with another easy victory.

She was far too good for Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual, winning 6-3 6-1.

Number four seed Monica Seles joined Venus in the last 32 after a comfortable Centre Court win over Paraguay's Rossana Neffa-De Los Rios.

Seles took the opener 6-4 and raced through the second 6-0 as her opponent wilted.

Women's sixth seed Justine Henin is through to round three after beating Denisa Chladkova 6-2 7-5.

The Belgian, beaten in last year's final by Venus Williams, raced through the first set against the Czech Republic girl.

She broke early and never relinquished that advantage as her superb backhand had her opponent in constant trouble.

The second set was tighter, and Henin dropped her serve when aiming to close out the match at 5-4.

But she broke back immediately to lead 6-5, and made no mistake second time round to take victory.

10th seed Silvia Farina Elia is also through to the third round after beating Germany's Barbara Rittner in straight sets.

The 29-year-old Italian broke Rittner in the second game of the match before taking the opening set 6-3.

And the second set was again dominated by Farina Elia who broke Rittner twice to come through 6-2, to reach the last 32 at SW19 for the first time in 11 attempts.

Women's 12th seed Elena Dementieva joined Farina Elia in round three.

The Russian was far too good for France's Emilie Loit, winning 6-1 7-5

Another women's seed to progress was the number 16 Lisa Raymond.

The American defeated Wynne Prakusya 6-4 2-6 6-1.

The number 19 seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria is through after beating Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland.

Maleeva came through comfortably 6-4 6-3.

Another women's seed to fall was the number 17 Patty Schnyder.

She went down 6-1 6-3 to former champion Conchita Martinez.

Goran Ivanisevic's 18-year-old protege Mario Ancic failed to reproduce the form which accounted for seventh seed Roger Federer in the first round, as he lost in straight sets to Jan Vacek.

The Croatian qualifier's serve let him down from the start as Vacek broke him to love in the very first game.

Subsequent breaks came at important times as 26-year-old Vacek, from the Czech Republic, moved into round three with a 6-4 6-4 7-5 victory.

The men's number 17 seed Rainer Schuettler is safely through to the last 32.

He crushed Armenian Sargis Sargsian 6-3 6-0 6-1.
