VERDICT

Williams enjoyed an awesome fortnight at Wimbledon where she became champion for a fifth time after her straight-sets victory over sister Serena in the final but that's not to say she heads to Flushing Meadows on a high. Apart from that success at SW19 the 28-year-old has rarely challenged for honours throughout the season and at the Olympics she was knocked out in the quarter-finals by China's Na Li. Prior to her Beijing disappointment, Williams withdrew from events in Los Angeles and Montreal with a right knee injury and she must be fully fit if she wants to claim her third US Open crown and first since 2001.
