VERDICT

Yet to win on tour this season, the 2004 US Open champion's best showing at a Grand Slam this year was her run to the semi-finals at Roland Garros. It then all fell apart for Kuznetsova in the fourth round at Wimbledon as she blew a 4-1 lead in the deciding set to crash out against Agnieszka Radwanska. In Beijing the strong Russian failed in her bid for Olympic glory as she lost to home favourite Na Li in the opening round and this just summed up what has been a largely disappointing season. Kuznetsova was runner-up here last year but with champion Justine Henin no longer in the game, she will be hopeful of repeating her exploits of four years ago.
