VERDICT

Ivanovic's position at the top of the rankings is hardly secure given the wide open nature of the women's game since the shock retirement of Justine Henin in May and given her recent injury worries, there are no guarantees of a lengthy US Open run. The 20-year-old Serb followed up her maiden Grand Slam triumph at the French Open with a third-round exit at Wimbledon while she was forced to withdraw from the Beijing Olympics with a thumb problem. In past years at Flushing Meadows she's failed to go beyond the fourth round so she'll see this as an ideal opportunity to put that record right.
