The big-serving American will return to New York full of confidence as he has an excellent record here.
A first round exit in 2005 is the only blot on his record, having reached the final twice (winning one), and making the quarter-finals on every other appearance.
Having been forced to pull out of the French Open with a shoulder injury and the recent Cincinnati Masters due to a neck injury there will be concerns over Roddick's fitness heading into the tournament but he did make the final of the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles in his last appearance.
Although there may be little chance of Roddick repeating his feat of 2003 by winning here if you listen to the bookies, he is likely to be in the hunt well into the second week.
