The Valencia-based 26-year-old embarked on a tremendous run to the semi-finals here last year, causing upsets against David Nalbandian and Rafael Nadal on the way.
Although he lost out to Novak Djokovic in the last four, it represented easily his best performance in New York having previously failed to make it past round three.
Best known for his skills on the clay, Ferrer showed the improvement to his game on grass at Wimbledon, before losing to Mario Ancic.
Ferrer's form on the hard courts has been far from inspiring, but a quarter-final appearance in Australia will give him hope for another decent showing here.
