VERDICT

The longest-standing world number one in history goes for a fifth successive title this year but having lost his Wimbledon crown to Rafael Nadal, his hard court form does not exactly inspire great confidence. Since SW19, he has lost to Gilles Simon at the ATP Rogers Cup, Ivo Karlovic at the Western and Southern Financial Group Master, failing to make it past the last 32 of either tournament while he was dumped out of the Beijing Olympics by James Blake. But he has not lost in New York since defeat to David Nalbandian in 2003 and despite a mixed year, Federer will still take some stopping.
