VERDICT

Injuries have bothered Sharapova during 2007 and threaten to undermine her title defence here. Sharapova was brilliant as she won in New York 12 months ago to prove she was no one-Slam wonder, but largely due to a shoulder problem she's struggled this season and has suffered some crushing defeats, notably to the Williams sisters. Did pick up her first title of the year recently in San Diego but no sooner had that happened than she was forced out in LA with a leg injury. Hard to see her winning this year.
