Victory at the Australian Open this year proved that, when fit, Serena is still one of the very best. Since Melbourne she's been beaten in both Grand Slams by Justine Henin, but that's no disgrace and she's bound to be pumped up again as she seeks a third US Open crown. A lack of match practice will worry some - a thumb injury picked up at Wimbledon has kept her out all summer - but Williams has proved in the past that she can easily play her way into form during the course of a Grand Slam. Has to be considered a real title threat.
