VERDICT

The undisputed king of clay who clinched a third consecutive French Open title back in June - a feat that had not been achieved for more than 25 years. Weeks later the Mallorcan also gave Roger Federer his toughest match at Wimbledon for years when playing out a five-set classic in the final. Has still to be truly feared on a hardcourt though with his results being somewhat inconsistent, at least against the top players. Hasn't gone past the last eight here before and will need to be at his best to do so this time. If he is, Nadal will be a real title contender.
