The German was ranked as high as number two in the world back in 2002 before shoulder surgery was required. He's now back in the top 10 with a string of fine displays - particularly on the hardcourts. He made the semis at the Australian Open at the start of the year but injuries soon returned to disrupt his campaign. The shoulder forced him to miss the French Open and a torn stomach muscle did for him at Wimbledon. Haas hasn't been at his best since returning to action which is a shame as he'd normally be a decent dark horse here. As it is, it seems unlikely he'll do much in NYC.
