VERDICT
It's now more than two years since Sharapova stunned the tennis fraternity with her Wimbledon victory, but she's yet to return to a Grand Slam final. A string of semi-final appearances aren't good enough for a star of Sharapova's nature and she is struggling to justify the hype surrounding her. The omens for New York are good though. She ended Kim Clijsters' winning streak to win the title in San Diego and looks sure to challenge once more. Whether she can go that extra yard remains to be seen.
