Andy Murray believes it will be a personal triumph if he reaches the second week of the French Open.

Murray's only previous appearance at Roland Garros in 2006 ended in a first-round defeat and the clay event is his least favourite Grand Slam.

But the 21-year-old insists he is improving on the surface and is pleased with his progress during the build up to tournament, which starts on Sunday.

"I've only played at the French Open once before and lost in the first round," said Murray, who has agreed a new sponsorship deal with racquet supplier HEAD.

"Hopefully this year I'll get through a couple of rounds. I played well over the last few weeks on clay - certainly better than I have done in previous years.

"The clay at Roland Garros is a little bit quicker than on other courts and that should help me.

"I'm seeded 11 which is great because it means I miss the top players early on.

"Hopefully I can get through a couple of rounds. Getting through to the second week would be a great result."

Murray is determined to win a Grand Slam but does not expect Roland Garros to provide his most successful hunting ground.

"The French Open is probably not the one that I'm going to win first," he said.

"I have a better chance at Wimbledon or the US Open, but I'm still looking forward to the French Open that's for sure."

Murray intends to smile his way through the French Open as he seeks to address criticism of his surly reputation.

The British number one was recently described as a "miserable git" by Tim Henman and he admits his occasional flashes of immaturity are unacceptable.

"I personally think that off the court I'm pretty happy and don't get too down about things," he said.

"But on the court for sure I could be more bubbly, if that's what everybody thinks.

"I've watched matches of myself and sometimes I think the way I act on court is great, and at other times I don't like it.

"Sometimes I'm immature on court and that's not really acceptable.

"It needs to get better but this year it's definitely been much better than the last four or five months of last year.

"Hopefully I'll get there but I'm working on it."
