Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli was one of several female seeds to fall by the wayside on day two of the Australian Open.
The 10th-seeded Frenchwoman, who stunned SW19 with her run to the final last summer, was beaten 6-7 (3/7) 6-4 6-3 by Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson.
Dinara Safina, seeded 16, also crashed at the first hurdle, losing 7-6 (7/4) 4-6 6-2 to German qualifier Sabine Lisicki.
Two lower seeds also made their exit.
Agnes Szavay (20), a quarter-finalist at last year's US Open, lost a tight match to Russia's Ekaterina Makarova, going down 3-6 6-4 7-5.
And Lucie Safarova (22) was humbled 6-1 6-4 by Colombia's Catalina Castano.
