Frenchman Nicolas Escude has announced his retirement from tennis because of a persistent shoulder injury.
The 30-year-old, who reached a career-high ATP ranking of 17th place in June 2000, won a total of four singles titles.
Escude will be best remembered for his role in helping France win the Davis Cup against Australia in 2001 when he won the deciding rubber over Wayne Arthurs in Melbourne.
He also reached the final of the event a year later with the French when they lost 3-2 to Russia.
