There was an upset in the women's draw in Memphis as American Ashley Harkleroad dumped fifth seed Samantha Stosur of Australia, 6-4 6-3. Harkleroad will now meet Danish wild card Caroline Wozniacki, who recorded a 6-3 3-6 7-5 triumph over Puerto Rican Kristina Brandi.

The top women's seed in action was second seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who downed Yoon Jeong Cho of Korea, 6-3 6-2. The German will now face American Shenay Perry, a 6-3 7-6 (7-2) winner over Russian Ekaterina Bychkova.

Seventh-seeded American Amy Frazier moved on to the second round with a 6-2 6-1 rout of compatriot Meilen Tu. She awaits Russian qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova, a 6-3 6-1 winner over American Jamea Jackson.

Fourth-seeded American Laura Granville advanced with a 6-3 6-4 victory over compatriot Meghann Shaughnessy.
