Raonic reached the quarter-finals at the French Open and the semi-finals at Wimbledon but had failed to get to a final this year before his run in Washington DC.

The big-serving world number seven did not seem to be feeling the pressure though as he eased through the first-set, breaking Pospisil three times as he took it 6-1.

The world number 36 improved in the second set but Raonic took the one break-point he created to win it 6-4 and wrap up the match in an hour and seven minutes.

In the women's tournament, Svetlana Kuznetsova won her first WTA title in four years as she beat Kurumi Nara 6-3 4-6 6-4.

The Russian has suffered an injury-plagued few years since winning her 13th title in San Diego in 2010 but reached the final in Oeiras earlier this season and looked fine as she broke her opponent three times in a topsy-turvy first set.

She was broken twice as she surrendered the second but needed just a single break of serve to win the third and claim the match in two hours 16 minutes.
