The Frenchwoman has withdrawn from forthcoming tournaments in Stanford and Carlsbad due to the problem. She is now due to begin her North American hardcourt season in Toronto starting on August 5.
"The injury has not completely healed," Bartoli said of the injury, which she suffered during Wimbledon.
The Bank of the West Classic in Stanford is being held next week and Bartoli's absence is another blow to organisers, who have already seen Maria Sharapova pull out.
The world number four, Agnieszka Radwanska, is the only top 10 player left in the 28-strong field in California, and the only other player in the top 20 is Samantha Stosur.
Bartoli, who has reached the Stanford final three times, has been replaced in the main draw by American Mallory Burdette, who is ranked 78th.
"It is unfortunate she will not be able to attend," said tournament spokeswoman Kim Hall.
The Southern California Open takes place the following week in Carlsbad. Bartoli will be replaced there by Daniela Hantuchova.
