After 12 years of trying, Slovak veteran Zuzana Kucova - the world 1,152 - has finally won a match at a Grand Slam.

The 30-year-old pulled off a massive shock too, beating the 24th seed Julia Goerges 7-6 (10-8) 6-0 in the first round at Roland Garros.

Kucova is one of the WTA's most durable, persistent and yet unsuccessful players.

She has been trying and failing to win a match at a Grand Slam since 2002 when she was knocked out in qualifying at the US Open.

She first qualified for the first round in Paris in 2004, but lost in the first round to Vera Zvonareva.

Kucova did not qualify for the first round of any Slam again until her best year on the tour, 2010.

She lost in the first round in Australia, at Wimbledon and at the US Open but she enjoyed a career-high ranking of 101.

She lost in the qualifiers in all four majors in 2011, and did not even try to qualify last year.

But after coming through qualifying this year at Roland Garros she finally tasted victory on the big stage, edging a first-set tie-break 10-8 and romping through the second set.

She next faces Virginie Razzano - who enjoyed her own biggest day in the first round in Paris last year when she upset Serena Williams.
