The fifth seed, a winner in Romania in 2011, needed 85 minutes to get the better of Flavio Cipolla, beating the Italian 6-0 7-6 (7/1).

He will meet David Goffin next, while a stiffer test lies ahead for Jarkko Nieminen.

The Finn took three sets to see off Evgeny Donskoy and will next play the defending champion and three-time winner Gilles Simon.

The home crowd were treated too as local favourite Victor Hanescu won his clash with Matthias Bachinger in two sets.

Also successful on Tuesday were Sergiy Stakhovsky who dropped just four games against Jaroslav Pospisil, Lukas Rosol who beat Gilles Muller and wild card Gael Monfils against Filippo Volandri.

Belgium's Xavier Malisse was beaten by Santiago Giraldo, winning only three games in the process, and Tobias Kamke, the talented German, saw off Paul-Henri Mathieu.

In the day's last match-up, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez saw off the seventh seed Horacio Zeballos in three sets.
