Irina-Camelia Begu advances

Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu led a trio of seeds to advance in from the first round of the women's draw at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.

Irina-Camelia Begu: Won in three sets

Fourth seed Begu was pushed all the way by Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia before sealing a 6-2 3-6 7-5 win.

Also advancing were Dutch fifth seed Kiki Bertens and number seven Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain.

Bertens was a 6-2 7-5 winner over Sharon Fichman of Canada, while Dominguez Lino overcame Italy's Flavia Pennetta 7-5 6-3.

There were also wins for Spain's Estrella Cabeza Candela and Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan.

The only seed in action in the men's draw, Jurgen Melzer of Austria, was beaten in straight sets by Portugal's Joao Sousa.

Despite being ranked 44 places below his opponent, world 93 Sousa was on top throughout on his way to a 6-4 6-3 win.

Spain's Pablo Andujar got just his second win of the season as he beat Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 3-6 7-5 6-2.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Colombia's Santiago Giraldo and Argentinian pair Leonardo Mayer and Martin Alund.
