Watson's run to the quarter-finals of the US National Indoor Championship in Memphis last week was enough for her to rise two places in the latest ranking list, published on Monday.

At 39th in the new WTA list, Watson is a place higher than her previous best.

The 20-year-old won hard-fought three-setters against Galina Voskoboeva and Andrea Hlavackova in Tennessee last week before falling to Stefanie Voegele in the last eight.

Watson is now four places higher than Fed Cup team-mate Laura Robson, who lost in the opening round in Dubai last week.

Neither plays this week with both due to return to action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, an event which starts on March 6.

British number four Anne Keothavong does play this week. She's in action in the WTA tournament in Florianopolis, Brazil.
