The British number one needed three hours and 25 minutes to overcome her Kazakhstani opponent, ranked 107th in the world, 7-5 5-7 7-6 (7/4).
It could have been over quicker than that, but Watson let a 5-1 lead slip in the third set.
She told www.tennisnow.com: "Though I wasn't too pleased with myself for letting that huge lead slip away, I'm glad I was able to do what I always do: hang in there and fight through."
Watson will next meet either Melanie Oudin or Andrea Hlavackova.
In the day's other matches, sixth seed Chanelle Scheepers was ousted 6-2 6-1 by American Coco Vandeweghe, while seventh seed Magdalena Rybarikova beat Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France 6-3 6-1.
There were also wins for Lauren Davis and Melinda Czink.
