The sixth seed from Argentina has not enjoyed the best of records in Melbourne but he dropped just five games en route to a 6-1 6-2 6-2 victory over the Frenchman.
Del Potro has never made it past the last eight, having lost in the quarter-finals in 2009 and 2012.
