(12) Roberta Vinci
Vinci was on an upward curve in 2013 but saw her form drop off slightly towards the end of the campaign.
Vinci won two WTA titles last year but she will need to make another step forward if she is to make an impact at the Australian Open.
She reached her first grand slam quarter-final at the 2012 US Open at the age of 29 before repeating that feat the following year.
Her record in Melbourne is less impressive, with three separate appearances in the third round being the best she has managed to muster.
Vinci is known for her formidable doubles partnership with fellow Italian Sara Errani, with whom she won the Fed Cup at the end of 2013.
