The Hobart International was left without three of its top four seeds after Sorana Cirstea and Yaroslava Shvedova followed number one Hsieh Su-wei in suffering early exits.

Sorana Cirstea: Slumped to defeat in Hobart

Second seed Cirstea was brushed aside 6-1 6-3 by American qualifier Lauren Davis while, also in the second round, fourth seed Shvedova was beaten 4-6 6-2 6-1 by Elena Vesnina.

With Hsieh knocked out on Monday the only one of the top four seeds still in the tournament is number three Klara Zakopalova, who won her first-round match against Timea Babos 6-4 6-3.

Sloane Stephens and Mona Barthel, seeded eighth and ninth, also progressed through to the quarter-finals after beating Simona Halep and Chanelle Scheepers respectively.

Both seeds claimed straight sets wins, although in contrasting fashion, with Stephens seeing off Halep 6-4 6-0 in just over an hour while Barthel was pushed all the way by Scheepers before claiming a 7-6 (7/3) 7-5 win.

Bojana Jovanovski won her first-round clash against Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor.
