France's Gael Monfils looked to have put injury concerns behind him ahead of the Australian Open with a first-round victory in the Heineken Open on Tuesday.

Monfils: Three-set victory

Monfils picked up an injury during last week's Hopman Cup, but was able to come through three tough sets in Auckland to beat German qualifier Benjamin Becker 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 6-4.

Earlier in the day, sixth seed Jurgen Melzer was the biggest casualty, the Austrian losing to Australian qualifier Greg Jones, who won 7-6 (9/7) 6-2 and will face Monfils in the second round.

Two other qualifiers also advanced to the last 16, with Holland's Igor Sijsling beating compatriot Robin Haase 3-6 6-3 7-5 and Canada's Jesse Levine defeating local wild card Daniel King-Turner 6-2 6-2.
