(12) Marin Cilic
Cilic is in decent form having reached the quarter-final stage in five of his last seven tournaments including the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
He was knocked out by eventual winner Andy Murray in New York so there was no shame in that.
The big server beat Murray en route to the US Open quarter-finals three years earlier and he produced his best effort at a Grand Slam in going one step forward Down Under in 2010 to reach a career high of ninth in the rankings.
Murray was also his conqueror that day in Melbourne.
The Croat continued his climb up the rankings last year after landing two titles - Queen's and Umag - as well as making a final appearance in Munich.
Six of his eight ATP titles have come on the hardcourts and he will fancy his chances of going deep in Melbourne.
Will require a favourable draw to do so though.
